K. T. ERHARD. HOLDERS FOR ERASERS, CHALK, 0R GRAYONS.
No. 488,604. Patented Dec. 27,1892.
W/ TNE SSE S:
UNTTE STATES KARL THEODOR ERHARD, OF BROOKLYN,
ATENT FFICE.
NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,604, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed April 9, 1892- Serial No. 428,468. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KARL THEODOR ER- HARD, of Brooklyn, Kings county,New York, have invented an Improved Holder for Eras ers, Chalk, or Crayons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder for a rubber eraser, chalk, crayon or similar article and which permits its charge to be gradually projected outward or drawn inward, by turning a screw. Thus the holder always offers a sufficient grasping surface and at the same time insures cleanliness, as it prevents directcontact between its contents and the hand.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a top view of my improved holder. Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sections thereof on line m, to, Fig. 1, showing the slide in different positions. Fig. at is a rear viewof the holder. Fig. 5 a cross section on line y, y, Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 a perspective of the slide.
The letter a, represents a case of suitable material and form and open at its front a, for the admission of a rubber eraser, chalk, crayon or similar article A. Within the case a, there is free to move backward and forward a slide 1), provided with outwardly opening spring jaws b, and with a tapped projection or nut 13 This nut is received by a longitudinal groove or channel a formed in one of the sides of case a.
c, is a screw shank engaging the nut b and of asize to fit Within the channel (1 At the back of the case, the screw projects out- Wardly through a perforation and is there provided with afolding handlec. To accommodate this handle when folded down, the back of, of case a, is provided with a central recess (1 Thus the holder can be conveniently carried in a pocket.
The operation of the device Will be readily understood. When the screw is turned in one direction it will draw the slide 19, and its charge A, into the case to any desired extent. When turned in the opposite direction, it will push the slide forward and project the charge outward. Thus it will be seen that as the rubber or similar article is used up,it can be fed outward to a corresponding degree. When not in use, the rubber may be drawn entirely into the case to be protected against contact with the hand or pocket.
That I claim is:
1. The combination of a case with an inclosed tapped slide having outwardly opening jaws that are adapted to grasp the eraser, chalk or crayon and a screw that enters the case and engages the slide, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of case at, having rccessed back a with slide 5, having nut b and with screw 0, engaging said nut and having Y folding handle 0, substantially as specified.
KARL THEODOR ERHARD.
