' PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters-Patent.
- -Patented ct. 16, 1917.
Application filed July 19, 1915. Serial No. 40,738.
To all Lu/1.0m it may concern Be it known that I, STANLEY E. F. BOSAN- QUET, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Forest House, Comboyne, in New South Wales and Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pen holders and more particularly to the class of pen holders which are designed for conveniently releasing the pen point from the holder.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a pen holder of this character which will rigidly hold a pen point in place while the pen is in use and which can be quickly released, when the pen point becomes corroded or defective, without soiling or injuring the fingers.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a penholder which is provided with a groove of irregular contour for holding a pen point which may be tilted for conveniently ejecting the same from the holder.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description of the device progresses the invention resides in the novel construction, simplicity of operation and cheapness of manufacture.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same showing the pen point removed,
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the holder;
Fig. 4c is a sectional view on the line 4-'l of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the penholder showing a modified form of the clamping ferrule.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 1 indicates the handle of the penholder which is restricted so as to provide'an extension 2 upon which the pen point 3 is adapted to be held.
As pen points are usually made in a substantially semicircular formation in cross section I provide a semicircular groove 4 ex tending longitudinally of the extension 2, the longitudinal contour of which is irregular as shown in Fig. 1 in order to provide a raised portion or hump 5 upon which the pen point 3 is adapted to be tilted.
At the extreme end of the extension 2 I "provided a ferrule 6 which is rigidly fixed to the extension 2 so that its inner edge is situated a slight distance in front of the hump 5 of the groove 4. A ferrule 7 is slidably mounted upon the extension 2 the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
In using the device a pen point is inserted under the ferrule 6 and thrust along the groove 4. The hump 5 will cause the inner end of the pen point to extend slightly upward and out of the groove 4: whereupon it will be pushed down into the groove, the hump 5 acting asa fulcrum, and the sliding ferrule 7 moved over the end of the pen point which will cause the pen point to be held rigidly while in use.
At such time as it is desired to remove the pen point it is only necessary to slide the ferrule 7 rearwardly and off the pen point, push downwardly on the front end of the pen point until it assumes the position shown in dotted lines, from which position it may be easily thrust and ejected from the holder.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a sliding ferrule 8 of much greater length than the one shown in the preferred form. This is to be constructed of rubber or cork so as to provide.
a finger grip that will afford greater holding surface if such should be desired.
I claim 1. A pen holder including a handle having an extension formed thereon provided with a longitudinally extending groove for receiving a pen point means formed in the groove to provide a fulcrum for the pen point, stationary means arranged at the extremity of said extension for clamping the point, and means slidably arranged 011 said extension for clamping the inner end of said pen point.
2. A pen holder including a handle having an extension formed thereon provided with a longitudinally extending groove, a hump provided in said groove to provide a fulcrum for a pen point and means arranged on said extension on each side of said hump for clamping a pen point.
3. A pen holder including a handle. an extension formed on said handle provided with a groove of irregular contour, a hump provided by the irregular contour of said groove, a ferrule fixed to the end of said extension and slightly forward of said hump, and a slidable ferrule mounted on said extension as and for the purpose set mounted on said extension as and for the forth. purpose set forth. 1o
4. A pen holder including a handle, an In testimony whereof I afiix my signature extension formed on said handle provided in presence of twowitnesses.
5 with a laterally curved handle extending lon- STANLEY E; F. BOSANQUET.
gitudinally in irregular contour to provide Witnesses: a hump, a ferrule fixed to the extreme end E. W. PATON, of said extension, and a slidable ferrule E. V. WVREN.
