FIREBACK FOR STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,199, dated. December 20, 1892.
Application filed February 23, 1892. Serial No. 422,349, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES HATFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firebacks for Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to afireback adapted to be applied over the original fireback of a stove when the latter has become burned out, and consists of the construction and means hereinafter set forth for attaching said fireback to place within a stove.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1, is a top view of a stove, a portion of which is broken away, and showing my improvement in an operative position therein. Fig. 2, is a vertical section taken through my improved fireback, original fireback, oven and due, said view being taken on the dotted line 2, 2, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a view of my improved fireback detached from the stove, showing an auxiliary fireback connected thereto (when desired to employ the latter) to accommodate varying depths of fire-chambers, as will hereinafter appear.
My invention consists of a fireback A adapted to fit and rest over an original fireback B of a stove, said fireback A being secured to position therein by means of a suitable wire or wires a connected to said fireback and anchored or locked within the ovenfiues O of the stove. The wires a may be connected to the fireback A in any suitable manner; but, it is preferred to form the lat ter with the raised portions b on its top flanged portion, a suitable opening being formed in said portion between the raised portions b-the retaining wire being passed through said opening, as shown. It is preferred to employ two of such retaining wires, with two raised portions formed on the fireback, as set forth. The wire a, when hooked within the opening of the fireback, rests thereon on a plane below the top of the raised portions b,-the latter serving to protect said wire from immediate contact with the flames which pass up and over the fireback.
To accommodate stoves having more than the ordinary depth of fire-chamber, an auxiliary fire-back D is preferably employed, as
shown in Fig. 3, the latter having suitable retaining wires passed through the openings in fireback A, said wires preferably beinglocked thereto, as shown; but, if desired, said wires may be extended back and locked within the flue-openings. This auxiliary back D engages and rests at the rear of fireback A be tween its. end flanges a and may be readily adjusted thereon to the required depth of fire-chamber.
The advantages of my invention are apparent, affording as they do an inexpensive and efficient means of repairing burned-out firebacks. As is well known, so soon as a fireback isburned out, a new one of the same pattern must be secured and put in place of the old one; very frequently it is almost impossible to get a fireback of the right pattern. My invention overcomes all this disadvantage and inconvenience. As is well known, the center portion of a fireback always burns out first, while the end portions thereof are comparatively uninjured; and, by attaching my improved fireback over the burned-out portion of the original fireback, the latter is rendered as good as new, and at a much less cost than would be incurred to secure one of the same pattern. The means afforded for attaching my improved fireback to position within a stove, is very simple, as almost all cook-stoves are provided with downwardly projecting ovenfiues which unite with the central stove-pipe flue in the usual manner; and, by bending the wires Ct down within said lines, a cheap and effective connection is had, and one that can be effected in a moments time.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to attach a fireback over an original fireback at its burned-out portion; but,
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fireback secured within a stove by means of a wire or rod connected to said fireback, the opposite end of said wire being locked or anchored within the fine-opening, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of firebacks A and B, and wires a, the latter being connected at one end to fireback A, the opposite end of said wires being bent down and locked within the lines 0, as set forth.
3. The fireback A having the raised portions b on its top flanged portion, with an opening therein between said raised portions, in combination with wires a secured at one end within said openings, the other end of said wires being locked Within the flue-openings, substantially as specified.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a fireback having an opening in its top flanged portion, said fireback being adapted to be socured within a stove in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
5. Fireback A having openings in its top flanged portion, in combination With auxiliary fireback D, the latter being suitably connected to the former, said fire-back A being secured to place by means of wires a locked within the flue-openings of the stove, substantially as specified.
