Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL BOWKER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED CARPET SLIPPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,788, dated July 18, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL BowIIER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpet Slippers; and Ido hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, ot a slipper containing my improvements.
In the manufacture of slippers of a stout material it has been found that the sewing or stitchingf7 as it is termed, is insufficient to hold the parts together, particularly where the quarter is sewed to the vamp or upper, and that they soon break apart and render the slipper worthless. Furthermore, as slippers are ordinarily constructed, theycannot be worn where there is any dampness, as the soles are thin and easily penetrated by moisture, and as a consequence they can only be worn in the house. In very cold weather the soles of common slippers are so little protection to the feet even in the house that the wearer often is obliged to change them to something thicker.
Mynvention consists, first,in making a slipper with a water-proof inner sole, which, while it renders the slipper warm and comfortable in the house, will at the same time allow the wearer to go about out of doors, more or less, with impunity.
Myinvention also consists in strengthening the slipper where the quarter is united to the upper by means of a rivet in connection with the ordinary stiching, substantially as hereinafter described, which lrml y secures the parts together and renders it almost impossible to pull them apart.
In the drawings, A denotes the vamp or up-Y DANL. BOWKER.
