HARNESS-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,619, dated December 6, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS M. GUTHRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hutchinson, in the county of Balls and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harness-Buckles, f which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in harness-buckles, and has for its object to provide a double buckle of a novel, simple, economical, and durable construction and to improve the construction of this class of buckles generally.

To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 a bottom plan view, of the same. Fig. 4is acentral longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a view showing the application of my buckle to checkreins, wherein three buckles are employed.

In the drawings the reference-numerals 1 and 2 designate the side bars of the buckle, which are connected near their forward ends by a broad transverse bar or plate 3. In front of the bar or plate 3 each of the side bars divide, one portion 4 flaring forwardly and upwardly, and the other portion 5 flaring forwardly and downwardly, forming a fork. The extremities of the upper branch 4 of the fork are connected by a cross-bar 6 and those of the lower branch by a cross-bar 7, thus forming upper and lower front loops 8 and 9.

The rear ends of the sidebars 1 and 2 are connected by upper and lower arched cross bars 10 and 11, and upper and lower arched cross-bars 12 and 13 connect said side bars intermediate the broad cross bar or plate 3 and the rear cross-bars 10 and 11, forming rear loops 10 and 11 Projecting from the upper side of the cross bar or plate 3, substantially midway between its ends, is a pin 14 for engaging a strap or other part of a harness, and from the lower side of said bar, at each side of the middle of its length, project lateral pins 15 and 16.

In the manufacture of the above-described buckle the framework, consisting of the side bars and cross-bars, is constructed of a single casting. The pins 14, 15, and 16 may also be formed in a single casting with the side and cross bars, though, if desired, they may be made separately therefrom and secured in holes made for their reception in the cross bar or plate 3.

My improved buckle is designed for usein connection with all parts of a harness, butis particularly designed for use in connection with checkreins or check-lines, with halterreins, and with bridle-reins.

In the drawings I have shown my improved buckle applied to use in connection with forked checkreins of the ordinary construction at the front, where the two branches of the checkrein meet. One of the branches is passed under the cross-bar 3 in engagement with the pins 15 and 16 and the other branch passed over said cross-bar in engagement with the pin 14, or vice versa.

WVhen used in connection with a halter or a bridle, the halter-rein or bridle-rein is run through the buckle, engaging the pin 14, is then passed through the halter-ring, and then back through the buckle, engaging the pins 15 and 16.

When the buckle. is used in connection with bridle-reins, the front ends of the reins are connected with the rings of the bridlebit in a manner similar to the manner in which the front ends of checkreins are secured to said rings.

When my improved buckle is applied to other parts of a harness where it is not necessary to have both the pin 14 and the pins 15 and 16, either may be omitted, or their relative position, may be changed, as occasion requires.
