Description
UN ITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER HAY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T E. B. TOWNE, OF SAME PLAGE.
(PUFF-HOLDER.
SPEGIFICATION forming paart of Letters Patent N0. 487,527, da.ted December 6, 1892.
Application filed .Tu1y 8,1892. Seria.l N0. 439 (N 11101181.
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I WALTER HAY, a eitizen of the Unibed States of America, residing at Chicago, in the count-y of Oook and State of 5 Illinois, have invented oertain new and useful Improvements in CufE-Holders, of whioh the following is a speoification.
My invention relates to oertain improvementsin devioes of the dass above mentioned,
and Which are particularly applicable to a clasp designed to fasten the ouffs to the inside of the ooat-sleeves.
The principal objeots to be attained are of oourse ease in seouring the holder to the cuff and also to the sleeve am]. a oertainty that the holder will not let go of either unless manipulated parbicularly With that object in view. I have gained thes advantages by 0ertain deviees desoribed below, the more important feature of whioh is the arrangement of the olasp, so that when open it Will grasp and clamp anything that is pushed againsu lt and when olosed will loe proof againsb any pul]. upon-the oulf, but will be readily and.
easily un'fastenod by pulling the ooat-sleeve directly outward and away from it-.
My invention is illustrated in its preferred form by means of three figures, of whioh Figure 1 is a perspeotive showing the olasp 0 in its open position. Fig. 2 is a perspeotive showing the same in its closed position, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan.
A strip of elastio materialas for instanoe, spring metal Ais turned up ab eaoh end and 5 5 provided with two slots a a. Toggle-jaws B B, pivoted together by means of ears b b, am
provided with tongues b b upon tl1eir free ends and serrated edges upon the pivoted ends, the latterbeing provided t0 en able them to take a firm grip upon the eoat-sleeve. Tl1o two jaws after being pivoted together are placecl with the tongues upon their free ends projeoting through the slots a a and loosely olinohed upon the outside of the plate A, forming hinge-joints With the latter. The natural position of the spring-plate A holds the jaws in the open position; but said plateis adapted 130 yield and allow the jaws t0 be foroed downward, putting the plate under tension,
of course, so that in foroes the two jaws tightly together. The ears b b are so proportioned thattheir pivot may pass below a line drawn beuween the slots a a, so that when said jaws are foroed Clown to the limit of their movement; the tension of the spring-plante tends to hold then1 Clown, as well as to force them together.
Upon the bottom of the plate A is a stud 01 button O, formed of a pieoe of metal bent ab right angles and fastened 130 the platte A, and said plate of metal has a tongue c stampe out of it and bent in the opposite directiox1.
In operation the portion c of the button is thrust through the hole of the cuff and the whole buton then foroed Lhr0ugh said hole. The olasp is opened and thmstwith the cuff, into the sleeve. When in theproper position, the ooab-sleeve is pressed down upon the clasp, which grasps it firmly. T0 remove the eufi, the sleeve is lifted directly above the olasp, openingthe latter and easlly freeingthe sleeve therefrom. V
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 'lhe combination, with abase-plate provided with means for attaohing it to the ouff and havlng two elastio upright portions, of two jaws B B, pivot-ed together by depending ears b b and having their free ends pivoted to the elastio uprights, substantially as desoribed.
WVALTER HAY.
