IRVIN A. SI-IAIV, OF KINSLEY, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY F. BEST, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,131, dated November 29, 1892. Application led April 19, 1892. Serial No. 429,726. (No model.)
.To ttf/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVIN A. SHAW, of K insley, in the county of Edwards and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Stop-Bead, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention-relates to improvements in the construction of windows and doors, and its object is to provide a new and improved to stop-bead which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to combine a guide and a guard for the window and door.
The invention consists of a stop bead I mounted to slide transversely in specallycon structed bearings secured on thev Windowframe and springs concealed inthe said bearings and pressing the said bead to hold the latter in contact with the side rail of the winzo dow-sash or door.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as Will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
5 Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of 3o the improvement as applied to a window, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the saine.
The improved stop-bead is formed with a bead proper A, resting with its side on the Window-frame B and pressing with its inner edge against the side rail C of the window D or the door, according to the application of the device. Vhen the device is applied to a lower Window-sash, then the bead A presses on the side rail C ot the window-sash from 4o the inside, so as to press the rail in contact with the middle strip E, iixed in the usual manner to the window-casing. For the upper sash the bead A is arranged on the outside and presses against the outside of the side rail C of the upper window-sash to press the window-rail inward in contact with the divisionstrip E.
In the bead A are formed recesses or notch es F, placed suitable distances apart, and each 5o is engaged by a keeper G, preferably made of metal and secured by a screw H or other means tothe window-casing B. As shown in Figs. l and 2,each keeperGis made L-shaped and supports a spiral spring I, extending transversely and pressing with its outer end on a shoulder F in the recess or notch F of the bead A. The inner end ofthe said spring I rests in a seat J, formed in the keeper G, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. It will be seen that the bead A has its outer 6o edge molded to any desired shape or form, so as to ornament the windowcasing in the usual manner, the bead, however, being cut out to form the recesses F at suitable distances apart for the admission of the keepers G, which are of a similar contour to the bead A, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1 at the same time the said keepers concealing and supporting the springs I for pressing the bead in contact with the side rail of the window or 7o door. Thus the springs I are not visible at all from the outside, and as the keepers G conform to the general contour of the bead the same will be hardly noticed, and thus does not form an unsightly and objectionable feature of the Window-casing. It Will be seen that the bead A not only forms a guide for the side rail of the window and door, but it also forms a guard for the same, as the springs hold the said bead firmly in contact with the 8o side rail, thus preventing cold air or other matter from passing from the outside of the windowr to the inside of the room. At the same time the spring-pressed bead holds the window-sash in the desired position.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A stop-bead comprising a bead proper mounted to slide transversely and formed with 9o recesses, a keeper secured to the Window-casing and iitting into the said recesses ot' the bead, and springs concealed and supported in the said keepers and extending transversely to press on the bead, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a bead formed with recesses, each formed with a shoulder, of keepers adapted to be secured to the Window-casroo ing and fitting into the said recesses, the seid pressed against the shoulder in lche correkeepers conforming to the shape of the said spending recess, substantially as shown and bead and each provided with a, seat located described.
opposite the shoulder ou the corresponding IRVIN A. SHAW. 5 recess, and a spiral spring held Within the Witnesses:
said keeper and supported at one end in the A. M. MERRYMAN,
seat thereof, the other end of tlie spring com- H. F. BEST.
