Be it known that I, EDWARD N. CUMMINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Toilet or Wrapping Paper, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. My invention has for its object to produce a package of toilet or wrapping paper which may be easily and cheaply prepared, which shall be compact andtherefore capable of being packed and shipped at a minimum 0f expense, which may be used withoutl a fixture or contrivance of any kind, which shall secure the paper from displacement, protect it from dustv and the like, and from which the paper may be readily taken in given quantities, as required.

The invention consists in certain novel fea# tures, which are set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and made a part hereof. l

My invention will be readily understood from the following description, in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings,

which form a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a package of toilet-paper prepared for sale and shipment. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the package ready for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Figu2, showing more fully the mannerI of detaching a given quantity 'of paper from the package. The paper A, which is cut in a continuous' ribbon or sheet, is reversely folded on itself, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4. The sheet is partially severed on alternate lengths thereof at points intermediate the folds `by perforations, as shown at h in Fig. 5, or preferably by cuts which pass each other, as shown at g, Fig. 4,:,the latter method of partially severing leaving the adjoining portions attached at two points bya narrow piece of paper in such a way,that the -portions will part under Very slight strain. Near the upper folds a, of the package a wire vor rod b is passed through, which serves to hang the package to the wall or other support. When a sheet is pulled out of the package, it first tears away from the wire b, and then separates where it is par. tiall'y severed', as at g, near the lower fold d. It-shouldbe so nearly severed at that point as to .part readily, otherwise the next-succeedingr` double sheet would tear away from the wire b, and two sheets would be withdrawn instead of one. The cutting or severance at the point g should be so nearly complete that it `will separate at that point rather than tear away from the wire b. By this arrangement,

a double sheet of paper may be withdrawn from the package each time the depending ilapf is pulled. 4The line of severance being somewhat short of and above theplower line of fold d, the flap f is left hanging-down each time a double sheet is withdrawn, ready to be Seized when it is desired to Withdraw another sheet. The wire bis not essential, but it is a convenience in suspending the package for use. Then the wire or rod is used, the folds of the paper directly above the wire are slit by a short cut, as shown at f', Fig. 4, so that the paper will tear away from the wire more readily and with less liability of making an objectionable tear or hole in the sheets. y By this means when a sheet is withdrawn from the package it has only a short slit at the point where the wire passed through. A package consisting of a given number of sheets or folds is covered by an outside case or covering B, preferably of paper secured bypaste or in any other suitable manner. Ou the front of the package, at the lower end, a portion or strip K of the outside wrapper is. marked or perforated and bears printed directions (see Fig. 1) indicating that the portion within the perforations is to be torn or cut out. When this iskdone, the flap f of the front sheet falls in such manner that it may be easily with-A drawn, one double sheet and one `only at a time.

'My invention can 'be applied to wrapping- ICO v Lpaper, in which case the paper is folded as above set forth and may or may not baco-verd with a. case or covering, and it Willibe partially severed or lperforated, as is toiletpaper. In. this way packing or wrapping paper may be placed under a counter if used in a shop, and the valuable counter-space nowfrequired for paper in rolls left free for other uses. j The paper may be partially severed, asat g, either on every alternate fold or less -frequently,the distance between the'points ot severance depending on the amount of paper which it is desired to withdraw at one time.

What I claim is 1. A package of paper consisting of a continuons sheet reversely folded upon itself, as

A package of paper consisting of a continuous sheet reversely folded upon itself, as described, and partially severed ou alternate lengths at points intermediate the folds, and a securing and suspending wirepassing through one end of said package, the folds ofl said paperl being slitvted'adjacent said wire,

3. A package of paper consistingof a continuous sheet reversely folded upon itself and partially severed onalternate lengths at points intermediate the folds, as described,

and a case or covering inclosing the same and having at the front lower portion thereof a removable strip, whereby when the said strip is removedthe paper may be readily withdrawn,as required, substantially as set forth.
