Description

y 5, 1931- i H. M." SINCLAIR 1,803,736
PACKAGE Filed July 12. 1929 INIVENITOR.
ATTORNEY. 4
Patented May 5, 1931 UNITED STATES HOMER M. SINCLAIR, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS "PACKAGE Application filed July 12,
This invention relates to improvements in packages and is'directed to improvements in packages for dispensing sheet material such as waxed paper and the like.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a folding box which is con structed and arranged when set up to provide a container for sheet material and has certain novel features of construction to facilitate the ready removal of sheets therefrom in a fiat unwrinkled condition.
The-novel features of the invention are accomplished by means of the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a folding box in partially folded up condition, and
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the box as it appears in sheet dispensing condition.
Referring to the drawings the invention will now be described in detail.
At 2 is shown a folding box preferably formed from a single sheet of suitable material such as cardboard which is scored for folding to provide a box or container having sidewalls such as 4 and upper and lower walls 6 and 8.
The jointure of the side walls and upper wall is severed as at 10, while the upper wall.
is scored for folding transversely as is indi-' cated at 12 to provide a hinged flap 14. The flap 14 is also scored transversely as at 16 to provide an end tab 18.
Extending forwardly from a scoring line 20 in the lower wall 8 there are disposed end sections 22 and 24 and a flap 26 which are bendable relative to one another on scoring lines 23 and 25. An opening 28 is provided in the sections 22 and 24 as shown.
Side tabs 30 extending forwardly of the side walls 4 of the box are bendable on scoring lines such as 32 so that they maybe folded inwardly to co-operate with the end sections 22 and 24 for closing up the end of the box.
With the blank cut to the required form and suitably scored, it may be partially folded or set up as is shown in Fig. 1. In
this condition a. stack of sheets, such as stack of sheets.
1929. Serial No. 377,834.
waxed paper or the like, is inserted therein so that the edges thereof are presented at the forward open side of the box.
The tabs 30 are then folded inwardly against the end of the stack and the sections 24 and 22 are folded into overlapping relation and then upwardly so that the' section 25 hes against the lower wall 8 of the box.
In this Way a double plyend wall is proyided as shown in Fig. 2 which has an openmg therethrough for exposing the end of the To completely close up the box the flap 18 is turned downwardly and lnserted between the stack of sheets and donble end wall of the box. In this condition the package is in suitable condition for shipment or storage.
When it is desired to withdraw a sheet or sheets from the package, the section 14 is bent upwardly and rearwardly on the scoring line 12, as is shown in Fig. 2, so as to uncover the end of the stack and thereby expose the uppermost sheet thereof.
A look tab 36 is formed on the upper wall 75 6 by a cut 38 which extends through the wall, which tab may be raised to receive therebelow the edge of the section 16 so as to hold the section 14 in place as shown in Fig. 2. As the section 14 is then held open the uppermost sheet or sheets may be removed from the stack. Theopening 28 as will be seen facilitates the grasping of the sheets by the fingers so that they may be withdrawn from the open upper end of the box.
It will be noted that an end portion of the upper wall throughout the width of the box is hinged so as to expose the entire width of the uppermost sheet. This is to make it possible to remove the sheets without crumpling or wrinkling them as is usual where the. sheet is Withdrawn through a restricted opening in a container.
As distinguished from wrappers or containers which has removable sections to expose the contents thereof and wherein the contents must thereafter be exposed, the container of my invention is adapted to be used interchangeably as a wrapper for completely enclosing the contents or opened to expose and facilitate the withdrawal of the contents therefrom.
Having described the invention in the form at present preferred, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A package of the class described comprising in combination, a box formed from a foldable blank having an end wall provided with an opening in the upper side thereof to expose the forward edges of a stack of sheets in said box, the forward portion of the upper wall of said box being severed from the upper edges of the side wall thereof from said forward wall rearwardly to a line of folds extending across said upper wall to form a cover portion, the saidcover portion having a hinged forward end portion for inserting between said forward wall and a stack of sheets in said box and the said upper wall at the rear side of said line of folds-being provided with a slit to form a tab for receiving the outer edge of the said forward end portion to hold the same in an open position.
2. A package of the class described comprising in combination, a. box having side, upper, lower, front and rear walls, said front wall being provided with an opening therethrough extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof to expose the forward edges of sheets of a stack of sheets in said box, the upper wall being foldable on a transverse line intermediate the ends and being detached from the upper edges of said side Walls between said transverse line and said front wall to provide a hinged cover, a tab foldable at the outer end of said cover for inserting between said front wall and a stack of sheets in said box when the cover is closed,
the said upper wall being provided with a slit disposed between said transverse lineand said rear wall to form a holding tab for receiving therebelow the edge of said firstnamed tab to hold said cover in open position to expose the uppermost sheet of a stack and the said upper wall rearwardly of the transverse line to said slit having a length equal to the combined length of the cover, and said first-named tab.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. HOMER M. SINCLAIR.
