SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,374, dated N ovember'l, 1892.
Application led November 23,1891. Serial No. 412,306. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ENOCH GREENWOOD and REUBEN M. WISE, citizens of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New Yorin-have invented a new and. useful Belt-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of belt-fasteners employed in spinning and other light machinery; and the objects in view are to provide a cheap and simple device for connecting the two ends of the tape belt in such manner as to prevent them slipping and as to readily adapt them to be taken up or tightened.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a belt-fastener constructed in accordance with our invention, the same being in position upon a belt. Fig. 2 is a section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the fastening-frame. Fig. 4 is asimilar view of the fastening bail or lock.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In constructing the fastener we form a light oblong frame, preferably of sheet metal and of a length about agreeing with the Width of the belt upon which it is to be employed. This frame consists of a pair of opposite longitudinal side bars l and end connecting-bars 2, the inner edges of the former being toothed or serrated, as shown. The plate as a whole is also slightly transversely curved.

In operation or in order to apply the fastener to the belt the two free ends of the belt are doubled upon themselves, so that their folded ends extend above the locking-plate after said ends have been introduced upwardly through the same. The U -shaped locking bail, which has a length slightly greater than the opening in the plate, has its terminals introduced through the folded terminals of the tape 5, after which it simply remains to draw the bail to position upon the frame by exerting tension upon the belt at opposite sides of the fastener, If at any time the belt should need tightening or taking up, it simply remains to force the belt up through the fastener and draw upon the outer ends or terminals of the belt, thus increasing their length and decreasing the size of the belt. When applied and in position, the ends of the bail lying upon the cross-bars of the frame prevent a withdrawal of the ends of the belt downwardly through the frame, and the serrations or teeth formed at the inner edges of the longitudinal side bars obviate any sliplping tendency, in that they engage with the textile material of which the belt is formed.
A fastener thus constructed is both cheap and serviceable, maybe manufactured in various sizes to accommodate different widths of belts, readily permits of a taking up of the same, is easily applied, and is secure.
Having described our invention, what we claim isl. The herein-described improved belt-fastener, the same consisting of an oblong open frame and a U -shaped locking-wire surmounting theframe and longer than the opening therein, said wire having its terminals inwardly bent and adapted to be passed through the folded ends of a belt, substantially as specified.
2. The herein-described improved belt-fastener, consisting of the curved oblong frame having its inner edges toothed and the U- shaped wire locking-bail longer than the opening in the frame and adapted to be passed through the folded ends of the belt, substantially as specified.
3. The herein-described improved belt-fastener, consisting of the transversely-curved oblong frame toothed at the inner edges of its side bars and the U-shaped locking-bail formed of spring-wire longer than the opening in the frame and having its terminals inwardly bent at their free ends and greater in length than the opening in the frame and adapted to be passed through the folded ends of the belt, substantially as specified.
