Description

N. HUGHES. BUCKLE. APPLICATION FILED mm. 23, 1907.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
INVENTOR' Nelson Hay/12a NELSON HUGHES, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
BUCKLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10,1908.
Application filed December 23, 1907. Serial No. 407,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON HUGHES, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buckles for sanitary belts and the like and in its generic nature my improved buckle comprises a wire member of substantially U shape, to which another wire member of a similar shape is fastened. A tightening bar operates therewith to cause the U shaped member to clamp the belt, means being also provided whereby the buckle may be secured to a garment or the like.
My invention also embodies the specific details of construction which will be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l, is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof, the parts being in their loose position. Fig. 3, is a similar view with the parts drawn tight. Fig. at, is a perspective view of the buckle. Fig. 5, is a similar view of a modified form of buckle.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures 1 represents the main buckle member which is of substantially U shape in elevation and comprises the bottom 1, the sides 1 which includes the loops 1 and terminates in fastening ends 1. The ends 1 may be formed as shown in Figs. and -l to be sewn to a garment, or they may be constructed as shown in Fig. 5 to be hooked over buttons on the garment.
The supplemental U shaped buckle member 2, me a bot-tom 2 and sides 2 which terminate in eyes 2 that hook into and cooperate with the loops or eyes 1 of the member 1 to form a hinge connection therewith and lie parallel to or practically coincident with the member 1.
A tightening bar 3 of flat metal or other suitable material having end apertures 3, fits over the sides l and 2" to hold them in juxtaposition.
The article 4 is secured by passing the ends thereof between the members 1 and 2 and over the bar 3 and then back between the members 1 and 2 and drawn taut. As the member 4 is pulled, the bar 3 will approach the parts 1 and 2 of 'the members 2 and cause such members to tightly clamp the cloth.
Vhile the construction illustrated in the drawings and heretofore described shows a preferred form of my invention, it is mani fest that such construction may be further modified and portions of my invention may be used without others and the details thereof varied without departing from the prin ciple of my lll'llJl'OVBlllGllt or the scope of my appended claims.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.
Having thus described my invention, and what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A buckle comprising a pair of substantially U-shaped members hingedly secured together, a tightening bar held over said members and apertured to pass over the hinge connection thereof, said bar serving to force said members together, one of said U shaped members being extended beyond the hinge connection and having means for at taching it to a garment.
