UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
FRANCIS D. CADY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
WRITING-TAB LET.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 484,406, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed March 2, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS D. CADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Writing-Tablets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in Writing-tablets, but more particularly to that class of tablets in which is contained a roll of paper passing over the Writing-surface and adapted as fast as used to be moved along and disposed ot' in such manner as to present a fresh surface to be written upon. Devices of this character are particularly intended either for merchants for keeping account of current sales and the like or for the purposes to which a diary or daily record is usually put.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully explained, and then recited in the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may fully understand its construction, I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a plan view; Fig. 2, a plan view with the lid and paper-support removed and the paper torn in two and its ends rolled back to show the interior construction; Fig. 3, a central vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 4E, a sectional elevation on the line 'y y of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a detail side elevat-ion of the slide and its pawl in one position, and Fig. 6 a similar view of the same parts in another position.
The same numerals denote the same parts in each of the figures.
A rectangular box l serves to contain the moving parts of my device. Fitting within this box is a frame consisting of two side pieces 2 and 3,the whole frame being slightly narrower than the interior width of the box, so as to leave a space 4. at one side. The
sides of the frame are secured together by one A or more cross-bars 5. Journaled between the sides of the frame, as seen at Fig. 2, are two paper-carrying rollers 6 and 7, the latter hav- Serial No. 423,517. (No model.)
ling its shaft extended outward through the box at one side and provided with a key-seat for the application of a key 8. Near its ends the frame has journaled therein other rollers 9, over which the paper passes, as seen at Fig. 3, and upon the top of the frame is laid a square of tin or other relatively-thin and somewhat-stiff material, which is denoted by 10, and over which the paper, which I designate by a, passes between the rollers 9.
11 is a hinged lid, provided with a catch 12 for locking it in its closed position.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 4., the sides 3 of the frame have j ournaled therein two sprocket-wheels 13 and 14., over which and a support 15 runsl a sprocket-chain 16. Immediately above the support the shaft of the roller 6 is projected into the vertical plane of this chain and is provided with a toothed wheel 17, engaging the links of said chain and adapted to be driven thereby. Near. its edge the lid or cover 11 is provided with a slotted plate 18 immediately over the chain, and in this slot is arranged a slide 19, having a suitable handle or knob and provided with a pivoted pawl 20, whose tooth engages the chain. This tooth,as shown in the drawings, has one vertical face and one oblique face, so that when moved in one direction it will carry the chain with it, and when moved in the other direction it will ride upon and slide over the links of the chain without imparting any movement thereto.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the parts are in the position shown at Fig. 1, the length of the paper between the rollers 9 lies upon the smooth writing surface or tablet 10 and is visible through the opening in the lid or cover, and it may therefore be written upon until the blank space is lled.
The slide 19 by means of its knob is then moved along the slotted plate in the direction of the arrow on Fig. l, and this movement of the slide through the sprocket-chain revolves the wheel 17 on the roller 6, and thereby causes the latter to wind upon itself the length of paper, taking it from the roller 7 and moving the length of paper along in such manner as to present a fresh unwritten portion upon the tablet. The return movement of the slide causes no movement of the paper, since the pawl slips over the surface of the IOO sprocket-chain toward the position in which it is shown at Fig. 1.
i For the purpose of securing the ends ofthe length of paper each of the rollers and 7 is provided with some kind of a clip or fastening device, which I have thought it unnecessary to show.
Whenever it is desired to read the Written matter upon the strip of paper, the pawl 20 is,
` two paper-carrying rollers, one provlded Wlth raised upon its hinge, so as to be out of' engagement with the chain, and the paper may then be Wound from the roller 6 to theroller 7 by means of the key 8, and when thus Wound and that portion of the written matter which appears on top of the machine has ybeen read the successive portions of the Written matter may be in their turn exposed by the operation of the slide,r as heretofore explained.
I claim- 1. Ina machine of the character described,
the combination, with the inclosing case having a lid open at its center, `ot' the paper-carrying rollers, a tablet over which the paper passes from one roller to the other, a sprocket- Wheel borne upon the axis of one roller, a sprocket-chain arranged as described, and a `slide for the actuationr of the sprocket-chain,
substantially as specied.
2. The combination, with the case, of the a sprocket-wheel, a sprocket-chain running over suitable wheels*journaledl tothe side of the frame, and a slide provided with a pawl and engaging the sprocket-chain, the whole arranged substantially as specied.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signaturein presence of two: witnesses.
