To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GILES THOMAS GLAS- COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensborough, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Oombined Fire-Dog and Grate; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in combined fire-dogs and grates adapted to be used either as a fire-dog or a grate or as the two combined, as may be found desirable or convenient.

One object of my invention is the provision of a combined fire-dog and grate which will serve the desired purpose in athorough manner either as a grate or a fire-dog.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a combined fire-dog and grate which will present an attractive and ornamental appearance, which will be compact and capable of easy transportation, and which can be produced at a very low price.

To attain the desired objects, the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, substantially as herein illustrated, described, and specifically defined by the claims.

In order that the construction and advantages of my improvements may be more readily understood, I would invite attention to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my combined fire-dog and grate as it appears when used as a combined article. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the two parts forming the fire-dog proper, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the part used in connection with the fire-dog.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A A designate the two sections of my fire-dog, which comprise each the vertical uprights B B, having legs or supports 0 0, connected by the horizontal bar D, and inclined bar E, and the said horizontal and inclined bars are connected by the vertical strips E. From this construction it will be seen that two grated fronts are provided, and these fronts form the fire-dog proper. It will also benoted that one of the uprights is somewhat longer than the other upright, which gives an incline to the grated front, thereby rendering the front ornamental. Connected to the front, on the rear face thereof, by any suitable joint are the grates or grate-bars F, formed at their inner extremities with a leg or support G. These grate-bars and the bars of the front are arranged substantially at right angles to each other, and when the fronts are in the proper position for use a complete fire-dog and grate is provided, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

In order to make a combined grate and firedog which will be of more ornamental appearance and which will be of greater capacity, I employ the bottom grate H, which rests on the grate-bars F and isprovided with the vertical end pieces J and the front K, this attachment when used in connection with the fire-dog presenting the appearance shown in Fig. 3 and providing a complete grate and firedog of very attractive appearance and thoroughly efficient for the desired purpose.

It will thus be seen that I provide a combined fire-dog and grate which is of very simple construction, combining only three parts, which can be readily set up and taken down, which will prevent the fuel from falling out upon the floor, and which will be of large capacity. It will also be understood that my invention will perform its functions in a thorough manner by the use of the three parts or only two of them, also presenting an attractive appearance, and,being inexpensive of production, will commend itself as thoroughly practical and economical.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. A fire-dog and grate consisting of the grated fronts having the supporting-lugs on their rear faces and the grates resting on said lugs and having each a supporting-leg.

2. A fire-dog and grate consisting of the grated fronts having the supporting-legs, the grates having the broad front edges supported by said fronts and having the inner reduced ends, and a leg depending from the reduced ends to support the grates.

3. A fire-dog and grate consisting of the fronts having the grates provided with snpsections, of the grated bottom having the end ports and the grate resting on said supports pieces and the outwardly-curved central piece having the central and end pieces rising thereadapted to be connected to form a complete. from, with spaces on each side of the central closed grate.
