FLUME GATE.
No. 483,455. Patented s t. 27, 1892.

W/TNESSES ATTORNEYS T ctZZ whom it may concern.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
STEPHEN M. IRVIN, OF SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA.
FLUME-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,455, dated September 27, 1892.
Application filed December 26,1891. Serial No. 416,183. (No model-l dine and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Flume-Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
cleaning the fluine in case thelatteris clogged with sand.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is an inverted plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of a V- shaped fiume with the improvement applied to one side thereof.
The improved fiume-gate is provided with a cap or valve A, preferably made in the shape of a dish and adapted to close the opening B in the bottom or side of the Home (J, of square or V shape in cross-section. The cap A is fitted either on the outside or inside of the bottom or side of the fiume O and is provided with a downwardly or outwardly extending staple D, engaged by an eye E of a lever F, fulcrumed on a stud G, attached to the bottom or side of the fiume, as is plainly shown in the drawings.
The lever F is made in the shape of a spring, having its free end H resting on the respective inner or outer face of the bottom or side of the fiume C, so that the force of the spring presses the cap A firmly in contact with the respective face of the bottom or side to close the opening B.
The free end H of the lever F is bent outward slightly, as is plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to form a handle adapted to be taken hold of by the operator for turning the lever F, so as to move the cap Aover the openingB or from the same, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be seen that by this arrangement the cap A can be moved to the side of the opening B, so as to clean the fiume of sand or other material which may clog said flume.
It will be understood that the spring-lever presses at all times the cap securely in position on the face of the bottom or side of the fiume O to prevent leakage when the said cap closes the opening B.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A fiume-gate comprising a cap adapted to close an openingin the flu me andalever pivotally connected with the said cap and pivoted on the fiume, the said lever being made in the form of a spring, one end of which is connected with thecap and the other end pressing on the fiume, substantially as shown and described.
