SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,153, dated September 27, 1892.

Application filed December 21, 1891. Serial No 415,795. (No model.)

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM CARLTON IRE- LAND, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safes, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.

As well known, safes accepted as reliably reproof on being exposed to fire show the portion of their contents-account-books, paper writings, dro-at the rear and sides of the safe to be uncharred or otherwise uninjured to any appreciable extent, while the portions at the front or door of the safe are charred and injured to a considerable degree, even if not absolutely destroyed. The reasons for this are generally believed to be the greater heat at the door than at the rear and sides of the safe and the closer contact of the contents with the door than with other portions of the safe, because of the always landing of the safe on its door-the heavier side.

It is the object of this invention to remedy these disadvantages; and to that end it consists in providing the safe inside of the doorjamb with a removable plate or board, which :is made of material-such as asbestus or magneso-calcito-that is a non-conductor of heat and non-combustible and is shaped to fit the opposite side, top, land bottom walls of the safe and has means-such as a handle-by which to place it in position within and to remove it from the safe.

In the drawings forming part of this specication, Figure l is a central vertical section from front to rear of a fireproof safe having its walls and door, as well as its interior or chamber, of any of the usual or other suitable constructions to render the walls and doors of the safe essentially reproof and its interior adapted for the reception of articles-accountbooks, paper documents, and such like-as the safe is intended to hold. This figure shows the door of the safe as closed and the removable plate or board of this invention as in place and both in side view. Fig.

2 is a perspective view of said removable plate or board.

In the drawings, A and B and O are the top, rear, and bottom walls, D is the door opening or jamb, E is the door, and F is the interior or chamber, of the safe, all as before stated and of themselves forming no part of this invention.

G is a removable plate orboard located within and shaped to fit side, top, and bottom walls of the door-opening D and preferably closely and at the inner end portion thereof. This plate or board G is made of material practically non-combustible and a non-conductor of heat, such as Woven or otherwise suitably-prepared asbestus or magneso-calcite or paper or card-board suitably treated or any other well-known or suitable material. Said plate or board has a handle J, preferably a swinging and drop handle, but in any event and for obvious reasons such as to lie close on the board. Each corner of the board G has an attached projecting corner-piece K, made of sheet metal or other suitable material and shaped, preferably, to embrace the opposite side faces and the meeting edges at and making a corner of the partition.

The combination, with the door-opening and the door of a iireproof safe, of a detachable board or plate of the character and adaptability described obviously when the safe is exposed to fire prevents injury of its contents at their portions toward the door, and, being removable and unattached to the door, as stated, the safe can be used as ordinarily, and when placing it in the safe it can be adjusted in position as to the contents of the safe as may be desired, consistent, of course, with the space between the inner face of the door and the interior construction of or the contents of the safe.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-mi 1. The combination, with a safe having a door-opening and a door, of a board or plate made of a material which is non-combustible and a non-conductor of heat fitting said dooropenin g and removable and replaceable therein independent of the door, substantiallya described.

2. A board or plate made of a material which is non-combustible and anon-conductor of heat and is shaped to fit the side, top, and bottom Walls of afireproof safe at the inner portion of the door-opening and has a handle by which to place it in and out of position in said opening, as described, for the purposes specied.
