MOLDING-BARS FOR VAULTS.

Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
Application filed September 1, 1908, Serial No. 451,223. Renewed May 23, 1910. Serial No. 562,998.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr G. Gms'rnvc, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Molding-Bars for Vaults, and do hereby declare that the following is a full and exactdescription thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in vaults so as to make them more fireproof and burglar-proof than has hitherto been the case.
It relates especially to the construction of the molding bars which are attached to the face of a vault for the purpose of giving the same a finished appearance and supporting the vault door when open.
' Hitherto, it has been found, that the bars when constructed of flat plates merely readily buckled and warped in case of fire, resulting; in permitting the flame to pass behind the same and finally between the wall of the vault and the masonry inclosing the same. Experience has shown that this is a very great disadvantage, as there is a tendency for a vault so constructed to be destroyed in case of fire.
My invention resides in the extension and strengthening of the molding bars in such a way as to prevent their buckling in the manner above described, and also so as to prevent the passage of the flame behind them. It will, furthermore, be seen that molding bars constructed -in accordance with my inven tion, assist in protecting a vault from the attacks of burglars.
In the accompanying drawings: The figure is a cross-section taken through a vault equipped with the molding bars.
In the drawings 1 is a vault door which is supported in the front wall 2 of a vault provided with molding bars 3 extending outwardly over the masonry of the surrounding wall. I attach to the rear faces of the molding bars 3, angular beams 4, each of which may be termed a recess angle. These angular beams 4 are secured to the molding bars in such a way that one side of the angle constitutes a rearward right angular extensiton of each of the molding bars, which extends into the body of the masonry. That is to say, that the masonry of the surrounding wall is located on either side of the said rearward extension.
In case of fire, because of the bracing effect of the angular beams 4, the molding bars will have practically no tendency to buckle, but will continue to lie flat and in close contact with the surrounding walls. Such being the case, the flame cannot, of course, obtain entry to the space between the vault walls and the masonry walls contigu ous therewith. A vault so constructed will consequently more effectively resist the attack of flames. It. will also be seen that a construction of this character will assist in resisting the attack of a burglar, inasmuch as the molding bars cannotbe readily pried off when they have a return extension, such as that produced by the angular beams 4.
The molding bars 3 may be attached to the front of the safe 2, and the angular beams 4 may be secured to the molding bars 3 in any suitable manner, such as by welding, brazing or riveting.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a vault, one or more molding bars united therewith, and strengthening means united with said .bar or bars, comprising one or more angle beams adapted to prevent the molding bar or bars from buckling.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a vault, one or more molding bars united therewith, and strengthening means, comprising one or more angle beams attached to the molding bar or bars for preventing the latter from buckling.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a vault, a molding bar united therewith, and strengthening means united with the bar for preventing the bar from bucklin said strengthening means comprising a plate located in a plane sub stantially at right angles to the front of the vault. and directed toward the rear thereof.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a vault, one or more molding bars united therewith, and strengthening means, comprising one or more angle beams attached. to the outer edge or edges of the molding bar or bars for preventing the latter from buckling.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a Wall, a vault located therein and having its opening parallel With the Wall, one or more molding bars upon the vault also parallel to the Wall, and strengthening means, comprising one or more angle beams forming a rearward right-angular extension at the outer edge or edges of the molding bar or bars adapted to prevent the latter from buckling. 10 In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH Gr. GIESTING. Vitnesses F. DISEREUs, A. K. DAGGERT.
