Description

PATENTED JUNE 30, 1908.
G. W. ANDERSON.
WALL SAFE. APPLICATION FILED JAN.22,1908.
qvil'ncaacoi To all whom a may concern.
umrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE. l ous'ravus wILFoRD ANDERSON, or BLooiiiNc'roN, ILLINOIS; i
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS Wmrom) ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in, the county of McLean and State 0 Illinois, have invented a new and useful Wall-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wall safes.
The'object of the'invention is to provide, as an article of manufacture, a safe of the charactendescribed provided with lugs to hold a fire-proofmaterial on all six sides thereof, and other lugs embedded in the fireproof material but free from the safe body to 15 attach the same to a wall.
' With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, thesame consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a wall safe as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the safe showing the same before its parts are assembled. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the safe, partly in section, showing it as it ap ears when ready to be positioned in a wa fl. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view in perspective of the door hinge. Fig. 4 is a perspectivedetail view of the bracket or anchoring member that may be employed in securing the safe in the wall of a frame building. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view showing the means employed for securing the safe in position when used in a frame building.
The safe comprises a rectangular body or shell 1 ofcast iron or steel, a back plate 2 integral with the shell, a front plate 3, which is provided with a circular door seat 4, and a door 5.
The shell is provided with a forwardly projecting lug 6 at each of its four corners that are adapted to engage orifices 7 in the four corners of the front plate, these lugs being u set to insure a ositive assemblage of the p ate with the she I. In addition, the front late is rovided with a flange 8 that proects at rlght angles to its inner face and defines a socket in which the front end of the shell is seated.
The door seat is internally double coneshaped and the door 5 is externally double cone-shaped, the object of this arrangement Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 22,1908. a- No. 412,1so.
Patent ed June 30, 1908.
being to'provide a close fit between the door and seat to preclude the feeding of powder or other explosive between the meeting edges of the parts. Extending from one side of the door seat is a hollow extension 9, which is approximately rectangular in shape, as s own in Fig. 3 and in which fits a hinge member 10 carried by the door 5, a pin 11 passing through the extension and through the member 10, servin to hold the parts ositively assembled. he construction of inge shown will allow the door to be swung entirely away from its opening. The outer face of the door and of the hinge member l-ie flush with the outer rim of the seat, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the safe is positioned within a wall, no projecting parts will be seen. The door carries a knob 12 of an ordinary combination lock.
In order to render the body of the safe,
formed by the shell and the front and rearplates, fireproof, the same is inclosed in a ody of fireproof cement 13 which may be of any thickness, and lies flush with the outer edge of the door seat, it being understood that all six sides of the safe are similarly inclosed. In order to causethe cement shell to be firmly anchored to the body, the latter is provided adjacent to its rear end and upon its u per and lower sides with lugs 14, of
whic anynumber maybe employed. These lugs will be inclosed in cement and will thus serve to hold the latter positively in position. In addition to the lugs, wire nettin 15 is employed to reinforce the cement, and which is embedded therein and is thus hidden from view. After the safe has been arranged within the wall, flush with the plastering, its outer face is apered over, so that only the combination nob will be exposed to view.
Where the safe is to be anchored within the walls of a frame structure, a plurality of brackets areemployed, one of which is shown in detail in Fi 4. Each of these brackets comprises a pTate 16 rovided with a plurality of orifices 17, an at its terminals with pairs of studs or projections 18 that are disposed at right angles to each-other, are aproximately fiat, referably longitudinal uted, and are designed to be sunk into the corners of the cement shield 13 before the same is set. These brackets will be secured to the adjacent studdings of the building in which the safe is located, and any desired number may be employed.
The improvements herein defined are simple in character, but will be found thoroughl casing and entirely covering the lugs o n t effective for the purposes designed and wi lbody, and other In s embedded in the fire- 15 combine in providing a highly eflicient and proof material provided with openin s to rereliable form of Wall safe. ceive bolts or screws for securing sai safe to 5 I claim a wall. As an article of manufacture, a wall safe In testimony that I claim the foregoing as having a substantially rectangular body romy own, I have hereto aflixed 'my signature 2( 1vlided with projecting1 lugs and a front p ate in the presence of .two witnesses.
