Be it known that I, RALPH H. DICK, a citizen of the United YStates of-America, and resident of Marietta, in the county ofy VashingtonV and State of Ohio, have invented certain newk and useful Improvements in Vaults, of which the'following is a Specification. Y .I ,E
i This invention relates to `an improvement in vaults for the safekeeping of. valuables,
constructed primarily for Vfire protection.
The type of vault to which special reference is made is. usuallyA constructedof .reinforced concrete, but ofcourse it may be built up of brick, stone, or other suitable material. In
such vaults. there isof necessityan aperture or 'opening through which access can be had to the vault, such opening being of suiiicient size to conveniently admit thepassage of a manor bookcarriage .or omnibus intoV the This invention has particular reference to means for providing a metal vestibule adapted, in Cooperation with a cement fill- .25 ing, to set into said aperture yin said vault and seal the same at` the point of union therewith. It also contemplates means for locking said vestibule Aor frame Vinto Vsaid aperture so that `it maynot be readily with- `1 0 drawn, andso that the union between the wall of vthe vault and the vestibule may be reinforced by appropriate flanges or locking means.

The doors to which reference is made are 40 intended to be doors of fire resisting conlire resisting material; or iny Certain cases thespace may be left withoutilling, reliance for fire protection being had onthe dead air space `found within the walls of the hollow. The doors in this embodiment of the' invention are preferably made with interlocking flanges adapted to cooperate with corresponding interlocking flanges formed in the frame or vestibule with which the doors are .-155 mounted to cooperate, These interlocking preferably by the, angle-iron 5.
flanges on the vertical members of the frame, also the vertical edges of the doors, are' preferably made in such form that when they arebrought together by movementin a predetermined arc o f a circle, as for instance in hinged relation, Vthe tongues and grooves of the respective parts interlock so as to form a peculiarly tight and efficient joint adapted -to resist the passage of heat A under conditions of ordinary fires and of conflagration, whereas the tongue and groove formations in the top and bottom of the door and its corresponding frame construction simply interlock and fit Closely together when the doors are closed.
The invention is illustrated yin the accompanying drawings, in which-` Figure l isa perspective view showing the vault having twodoors, one. of said doors being open, and in the same drawing one corner of the vault 'structure is broken away` from the vestibule framework so as to exhibit the manner of its union with such framework; also to exhibit the interior structure of saidv vestibule construction.

The preferable construction is that where the space is filled with lireproot ing material. rlhe vertical outer edges of these doors are formed with' a tongue and groove construction as 14, adapted to register with the tongue and groove construction in the part ofy the trame designated as 6, andthe doors are swung in the arcot1 a circle which is incident to their movement on the hinges 10 and ll. In like manner, in the top and bottom of the door frame suitable tongue and groove constructions are provided as at l5, both in the frame and the door so that when the doors are closed, there will be a close litting and interlocking relation between the door and the frame. Said tongue and groove formations atr the top and bottom of the frame are also of sheet metal lilled in withtireprooling material.
.llreterably the aperture in thevault 2 is made slightly larger than the metal trainework construction above referred to as the vestibule and the trame, so that when said vestibule'and trame are introduced into the aperture, there will be a space admitting ot an adjustment of the vestibule and frame with relation tothe aperture, for the purpose ol leveling and `setting the same in a proper position with reference to said aperture. Then this is accomplished the space lying between the vestibule or frame and the walls ot the vault is tilled inwith cement or concrete :isat 16. lVhen this is set the doors may be placed in' position, or the doors may4 be placed in positionI and secured to the walls and the frame, or the whole structure comprising the vestibule, traine `and doors may be introduced intovthe aperture and` set at one andthe same time. It will be noted that when the vestibule and Ytraine islinally set into the aperture of the wallvol the vault, that it is locked therein by the internal and external flanges in addition to the bindingv ellect, 01": the cement which is interposed between the walls of the vault and the vestibule and trame construction. It will also be noted that by this construction lire resisting medium is inter posed inthe aperture of thevault, that is to-say,l closing the same with doors having lire resisting properties.
Another phase ot the'invention is the particular construction of the vestibule and trame devices adapted to be set into the aperture 'in the vault, and also adapted to cooperate with doors ot tire-resisting construction, and having interlocking flanges ot tongue and groove. formation and of the hollow type tilled with tire resisting 1naterial as described.
Claims; c v l. In combination with a vault of tire- `prooli construction and having an aperture therein to receive a suitable vestibule and door frame construction, the latter compris ing a rectangular trame formed of sheet metal with external and internal flanges and being of a size adapted to enter said aperture in the vault, and means for sealing said vestibule and frame into saidaperture in the vault, a door or doors'pivotally mounted on said trame and adapted to co-V operate therewith, ysaid doors beingV formed of sheet metal and ot hollow construction, va
