. Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention ,such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in burglar proof safes; and it consists of the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a viewin perspective of my improved safe.

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the chest.

A representsa burglar-proof safe, constructed in any desired manner,and provided on its front face with a circular opening, into which the screw or other circular door, B, is secured when it is desired to close the safe.v Within this safe is situated the burglar-proof slidingdoor chest C, which latter rests directly on the bottom of the safe, and is" considerably larger than the opening thereof, for thepurpose of preventing it from being taken therefrom by force. the chest, and the latter is provided on its top surface with an opening, which is closed by the sliding door D. This sliding door opens outwardly, and is so situated as to have an unobstructed movement, and it,together with the knob E, which operates the permutationlock F, is situated directly opposite the screw-door, so Vas to enable them to be conveniently operated, and also to enable the contents of the chest to be removed or inspected.

The chest O can be made of any suitable material, and in one or more pieces, and the upper open side thereof is provided on its adjacent edges with the grooves,dovetail or not, as desired, into which lthe correspondinglyshaped tenons and side edges of the door rest and move. This door snugly ts within the top of the chest, so as to make it practically impossible to be moved by wedges, and is provided near its rear end with the downwardlyprojecting abutment c, which latter limits the The safe' is built up around\ outward movement thereof.l The yfront edge of the door D is provided with a downwardlyprojecting lip or flange, d, the inner face of which is beve1ed,whil e the corresponding edge of the chest is also cut away and beveled, thereby forming a lock or union between the door-and body, and prevents the door from being forced up at its outer end.

F is a permutation-lock attached to the inner face of the front Wall of the chest, and operated by the knob Ein the ordinary manner. The bolts of the lock are adapted to penetratek the strike-plate J, which latter is rigidly secured to the under face of the door D, and rests directly. over the bolts of the lock F. Thus it will be seen that when the door of the chest is closed and` locked, the bolt or bolts prevent the door from being opened in the ordinary manner, while the manner of setting the door within the body prevents ,the door from being wedged up. By having the inner burglar -proof chest of greater dimensions than the opening in the burglar-proof safes, it makes it impossible to remove the inner chest, and renders it necessary for the burglar to operate in a cramped and confined way through the opening in the outer safe.

It is evident that slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be resorted to without departing from .the spirit of my invention, and hence I would have itunderstood that I do not confine myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at.. liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

I am aware that small safes or strong boxes have been located within a large safe, and sometimes builttherein; but in all such in- Astances such inner safes were smaller than the doorway of the larger safe, and could be removed therefrom through the doorway, and hence I make no claim to such construction.

Having fully described my invention, what 95 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a portable burglar-proof safe, of a burglar-proof chest situated within the safe and occupying the lower Ico e y 301,797 Y portion of the chamber, anda door hinged to the safe, by :means of which access is had' to the chest and to the space above the chest, the said chest being of greater dimensions .than the door-opening in the safe, for the puring, and provided with a sliding door located 2o opposite said door-opening, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, with a burglar-proof safe, of a burglar-proof chest situated within the safe, and provided with a sliding lid, the 25 frontend of which overhangs the front edge of the chest, the adjacent faces ol' the overhanging portion of the lid and chest being beveled in opposite directions, substantially vas and for the purpose set forth. 3o
