Description
JOHN FARREL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOORS OF BURGLAR-PROOF SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,595, dated July 13, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN FARREL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Proof Doors for Bank-Vaults, Safes, 85e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making. part of this specification, in whichj Figure lis a front elevation of a vault doorframe on my improved plan, the door being open; and Figs. 2 and 3 are sections taken in the planes of the lines A c and B b of Fig. l.
The object ot' my said invention is to prevent the breaking open of bank-vaults, safes, Ste., by the explosion of liquid matter, such as nitro-glycerine. As the doors of such structures have heretofore been connected with their frames, the joints have not been made so close but that nitro-glycerine could be introduced to the inside through the imperfect joints at the junction of the door with the jambs or anges of the door-frame. The explosive liquid thus introduced to the inside, and extending to the outside, could be readily ignited by the application of iire to the liquid around the joints on the outside. To prevent this my said invention consists in packing the joints at thejunction of the door with its frame, so that when the door is closed such packing shall render the joint liquid-proof.
In the accompanying drawings, c represents the door, hinged to the frame b, these being constructed and connected in any suitable manner to be burglar-proof, and not necessary here to be described. Along the inner rabbet c of the door-frame I secure a strip, d, of vulcanized india-rubber, of such width and thickness, as represented, that when the door is closed and locked it shall so compress this packing as to prevent the passage ot' any ex' plosive. liquid. The strip ot india-rubber can be secured in place by being introduced and rmly griped between the plates fand g, forming the rabbet c, when put together in making the door-frame. I prefer to place the packing in the inner or second rabbet, so that it cannot be reached by any instrument from the outside, and because the first rabbet should be used as a resisting surface to prevent wedges from being driven in between the door and door-frame. It will be obvious that this packing, instead ot' being placed in the rabbet of the frame, maybe secured in the rabbet of the door-frame, and that it may be secured in any other equivalent manner.
I have named vulcanized india-rubber for such packing because I have triedit with success, and I believe it to be the best substance for that purpose; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting my claim of invention to the use of that substance, as other and equivalent substances may be substituted.
I am aware that for the purpose of preventing steam, water, or smoke generated or produced by the action of heat on the filling ot' fire-proof safes from injuring papers and other valuables contained in an inner safe or compartment, the door of such inner safe or compartment has been packed with india-rubber.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improvement in the outer doors of bank-vaults, safes, and such like structures, packing the joints at the junction of the door with its frame, substantially as and for thel purpose specified.
JOHN FARREL. Witnesses:
WM. H. BISHOP, PETER DE LAcY.
