MEANS FOR HANGING MOLDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 482,742, dated. September 20, 1892.
Application filed December 28, 1891.
T0 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NIoKoLAUs HOFFEND, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Hanging Moldings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention has for its object the provid ing of means for attaching moldings to the wall of a room so they may be removed therefrom and replaced at any time when necessary, the means being such that the molding is not pierced by any body or defaced upon its exposed surface, and no adhesive sub stance is used.
The invention consists in forming incisions of peculiar form in the back surface of the molding and providing nails of peculiar construction to be driven into the wall, having spurs to enter said incisions.
The invention is hereinafter fullydescribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a part of a wall taken on the dotted line 1 1 in Fig. 2, with the molding in place. Fig. 2 is a view of the parts seen as indicated by arrow in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the rear surface of the molding with a part broken away and longitudinally sectioned. Fig. 4 shows a slight modification in the form of the incisions in the rear surface of the molding, Fig. 5 being a view of said rear surface.
The molding here shown is that commonly placed horizontally along the wall near the ceiling for the purpose of receiving the movable and detachable hooks usually used for hanging pictures, light mirrors, and the like.
Referring to the parts shown, A is the wall of the room, and B the molding detachably secured thereto.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the cavity a is Serial No. 418,368- (No model.)
in the form of a longitudinal inclined kerf formed in the molding at an angle of about fortyfive degrees with the surface of the molding. A number of the nails are driven in the wall in a horizontal line where the molding is to be placed, the nails being two feet apart, more or less, as may be necessary. The molding is then placed so that the spurs of the nails shall enter the kerf, as shown, when by pressing or slightly tapping the molding in a downward direction it is drawn firmly against the surface of the wall.
To remove the molding for the purpose of repapering the wall or other purposes, it is pushed upward off the spurs of the nails, as will be readily understood.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2,the head of the nail is sunk into the wall, so that nothing projects except the spur. In the forms shown in Figs. 4; and 5 the head of the nail is driven just to the wall and left projecting therefrom, the molding being formed with a groove d in addition to and joining the kerf c, in which to receive the projecting heads of the nails. When the heads of the nails are thus left to project, the Wall is not marred so much as when the heads are driven in flush, as shown in Fig. 1. This in some cases is the better and more desirable way.
What I claim as my invention is- A molding having a continuous longitudinal kerf or channel formed in its rear surface, in combination with nails, each having its head formed with a surface at right angles with the shaft or body of the nails to receive the stroke of the hammer in driving and an inclined extended part at one side of the head, the latter, with its extended part, being received in said kerf or channel in the molding when the latter is put to place on the nails, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
