VEHICLE-SHAFT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,471, dated September 13, 1892.

To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. CULLIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Shaft, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shafts; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby a pair of shafts may be adj usted both longitudinally and laterally to accommodate different sizes of animals, the construction of said means being simple and eective, strong and durable, easily and readily applied, and comparatively inexpensive.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of shafts, showing the improvement applied thereto and the parts shown adjusted in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the shafts, showing the parts disconnected. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line xx, Fig. l. Fig. Ltis a longitudinal section on the line g/ y, Fig. l.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the shaft ends or shafts proper, which are movably fitted in tubular irons 2, which extend backward and are bowed at 3, as ordinarily constructed, with attachingclips et secured to the lower or rearmost ends thereof. The front end of each of said irons 2 is formed with a series of apertures 5, and in a similar manner the rear portion of each of the shafts is in like manner apertured, as at 6, to thereby provide means for the removable reception of a pin or bolt 7, whereby the parts may be fixed in their adjustment. Each of theirons 2 is of similar construction, and extending inward therefrom and at right angles thereto are tubular arms 8, having apertures 9 therein. These arms S receive the cross brace or rod lO, which is adj ustably fitted in the same at its ends and is provided with apertures l1, adapted to align with the apertures 9 in the arms S for the purpose of removably receiving pins or bolts 12 to lock these parts in their adjusted position.
When the parts are adjusted to tit different-sized animals, the several bolts are removed and the parts equally drawn outward, the apertures being graduated as to distance in each of the parts where they are formed, so as to provide for a regularity in the adj ustment.
It will be understood that preferred metals will be used in the manufacture of this device and also that itmay be ornamented or embellished as desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination of tubular irons having apertures in the front ends thereof and inwardly-projecting transverse tubular arms also having openings in the ends of the same, shafts adjustably iitled in said irons, a cross brace or rod adjustably fitted in said arms, said shafts and cross brace or rod being formed with openings at the ends thereof, and removable pins or bolts connecting said parts, substantially as described.
