UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM R. MAXVELII, OF VAKEFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
POLE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,247, dated January 6, 1891.
Application iiled June 28, 1890l Serial No. 357,100. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, VILLIAM R. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vakefield, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful PoleCoupling, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in pole-couplings.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive pole-coupling capable of ready adjustment to adapt the pole to various-sized vehicles.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a tongue provided with couplings constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a vehicle pole or tongue of ordinary construction, having secured to its rear end a curved cross-bar that is centrally secured to the pole or tongue and is braced by side bars 3, which extend from the tongue to the end of the curved cross-bar. The ends of the curved cross-bar 2 are provided with brackets 4, which are composed of a plate 5, a cross-bar G, formed integral with the plate, and a curved brace 7, having one end bolted to the plate 5 and the other end perforated and adapted for the reception of the end S of the cross-bar l5, which end is reduced and secured The portion 0 of the plate 5, extending rearward of the curved cross-piece, is curved similarly to the curved brace, and the vcross-bar extends inward from the plate at right angles to the tongue and is approximately V-shaped in cross-section and has sliding upon it a coupling-block l0, provided at one vend with an eye ll and at the other end with a V-shaned opening l2, extending transversely across the block and adapted to receive the cross-bar 6.
The coupling-block l0 is capable of lateral adjustment along the cross-bar 6 to adapt the tongue or pole to varioussized vehicles, and
l the V-shaped cross-barand the similar opening of the coupling-blocks prevent the latter swinging upon the cross-bar, and in order to retain the coupling-block at any desired point of adjustment is provided with a setscrew 13, arranged to engage the front face of the cross-bar.
It will readily be seen that the pole-couplingis simple and inexpensive in construction, and is capable of a ready adjustmentto adapt the tongue .to various-sized vehicles From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
A thill-coupling comprisingthe bracket 4,
'consisting of the plate 5, adapted to be secured to the curved cross-bar 2 and having the curved portion 9, the cross-bar formed integral with the plate 5 and extending at right angles to the tongue or pole and being approximately V-shaped in cross-section, the curved brace 7, having one end secured to the plate 5 and the other end perforated and receiving the end of the cross-bar, and the couplingblock l0, being laterally adjustable along the cross-bar and having at one end the eye ll and at the other end theV-shaped opening to receive the cross-bar and provided with a set-screw arranged to engage the crossbar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto adixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM R. MAXVELL.
