Description

J. B. BARTHOLOME'W. EXTBNSIBLE POLE FOR SBPARATORS.
, (N6 Model.)
No. 574,297. Patented Dec. 29,-1.896.
UNITED STATES JOHN B. BARTHOLOMEW, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
EXTENSIBLE POLE FOR SEPARATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,297, dated December 29, 1896.
Application filed April 11, 1892- 10 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. BAnrHoLoMEw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des-Moines{ in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Poles for Separators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved draft device particularly extended for use in connection with threshing machines. Sometimes it is necessary to transport such a machine from place to place by means of horses, and it is then desirable that the tongue and other parts connected therewith should be in one relation to said other parts, and at other times it is necessary to couple the threshing machine to a steam traction-engine, and itbecomes necessary then, in order to transport the thresher most easily, that the tongue should be placed in another position with respect to the hounds and the other parts of the machine, and it is necessary under all circumstances to have these parts of the machine so constructed and related that they shall be extremely strong and capable of fieX ure both vertically and laterally without undue strain upon those parts which effect the connecting of the tongue to the vehicle.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a draft device embodying my features of improvement. Fig. 2 is a .plan View of the same when the parts are adjusted for connection with a steam-engine. Fig. 3 is a view showing the tongue and hounds in side elevation and the whiffletree in section. Fig. 4c is a cross-section on the line w 00, Fig. 1.
The pole proper is indicated by 16. It is at the rear end placed between the hounds 17 17. The latter are at their rear ends secured to the cross-bar 18 and project forward from it far enough to give a strong lateral bracing support to the tongue proper.
'19 19 are the brace-rods bolted to the crossbar 18 at their rear ends and at the front they are bolted by means of a cross-rod at 28', the latter passing entirely through the hounds 17 17.
In order to firmly bind together the front ends of the hounds 17 and also provide a stiff guideway for the rear end of the tongue, I employ cross plates or bars 24 and 25, there being one of each above the parts 17, and below them there is a series of the bars 25. A guideway is thus formed for the rear end of Serial No. 428,602. (No model.)
the tongue between the side parts 17 17 and the top and bottom cross plates or bars 24 25.
The whiffletree is held by the pivot 22. As great strain is imparted to the draft mechanism at this point when horses are used it is necessary to provide a reinforcement, which is accomplished by using a straddle-bracket 28, which is elevated at its center above the surface of the tongue and is bolted to the hounds 17 under the whiffletree, and a supplemental straddle-bracket 21, which has bifurcated arms that are bolted to the hounds considerably in the rear of the whiffletree and have an elevated plate 29, which lies over the latter, this bracket being arranged to permit free oscillation of the whiffletree. The bolt 22 passes through the top plate 29, the whiffletree and the straddle-bracket 23 allowing the whiffletree to swing freely above and the tongue to slide freely below.
In order to allow the tongue to be fastened in either of the positions, I provide apertures for the pin or bolt at 26 at at least two points, as shown.
I am aware of the fact that adjustable tongues, broadly considered, have been used or proposed in various forms, but I believe myself to be the first to have provided a draft mechanism having the parts constructed and related as herein described, including the adjustable tongue and the independently-supported whiffietree held and arranged in the manner set forth.
What I claim is-- In the running-gear of a threshing-ma chine, the combination of the hounds 17 17 extendingforward from said running-gear, the cross bracing-plates 24 at the front of the hounds, the bracing-plates 25 above and below the hounds and behind the front ends, the straddle-bracket 21 having the top plate 29, the straddle-bracket 23, the whiftletree JOHN B. BARTHOLOHEVV.
