UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
CHARLES H. JOHNSON, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS FOR SLEIGHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,781, dated May 25, 1875 application tiled April 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. H. JOHNSON, of Southington, in the county of Hartford and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slegh-Shackles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which my improved device is shown in perspective.
The design of my invention is to lessen the cost of shackle-irons used for connecting the shafts of a sleigh to or with the cross-bar, and it consists in the employment of a shank or bolt for connecting the shackle-eye to or with the cross-bar, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the eye of my improved shackle, which is constructed in the usual manner, and ha-s pivoted thereto a shaft-iron, B, having any ordinary form. From the rear side or end ofthe shackleeye A extends horizontally rearward a shank, A', that has, preferably, the form of an ordinary square-shank carriage-bolt, and is threaded at its end, so as to enable it to receive a nut, a. To connect the shackle-eye to or with the cross-bar of a sleigh, an opening having a sufficient size to receive the bolt A is formed in said bar, said bolt inserted within said opening, and the nut a placed upon its end and screwed home.
As constructed, the shackle costs materially less than those ordinarily used, while for the `purpose intended it has all necessary strength,
