CARTRIDGE-SHELL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,971, dated August 16, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OTTO F. SEIBOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Shells, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has reference to improvements in cartridge-shells, and especially to shot-shells.

Ithas for its object to produce at a low cost a reloadable shell, which shall be absolutely gas-tight, will not swell in damp weather, and cannot bulge or give as the wads are forced into the same.

With these objects in view I construct the shell of an intermediate cylinder of foraminous metal, covered internally and externally by paper or similar textile fabrics, all of which is more fully pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a cartridge-shell embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane at 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation with part of the outer covering removed.

In the drawings the letterA designates the shell, composed of the inner cylinder b, made of foraminous metalsuoh, for instance, as wire-gauze or a flexible sheet with fine perforations therein.

0 designates the external covering, and d the internal covering, the same being made of paper or other suitable textile fabric. The

end of the shell is secured in a suitable head e, the foraminous cylinder being expanded with said head, as at f.

The cylinder of foraminous material in this example extends throughout the length of the shell and the outer end is crimped, as usual, after the shell has been loaded. It is evident, however, that the cylinder may extend through part of the shell only-say, for instance, half its length, starting from the head e.

In the manufacture of the shells a part of 50 the covering-strip is first rolled up about a core in the usual manner, then the foraminous plate is rolled in, and finally the outer covering is formed by rolling the strip over the plate, suitable adhesive material being used. However, any other suitable method may be employed for producing the shell.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a cartridge-shell embodying a foraminous metallic cylinder and an external and internal covering of paper, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a cartridge-shell embodying a cylinder of Wiregauze and an internal and external covering of paper, substantially as described.
