SHELL CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed December 26, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. SOWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shell C0nstruction, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ammunition and has special reference to an improved form of shot gun shell.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a composite paper and metallic shell so arranged that but little metal will be used and yet the shell be prevented from swelling under the influence of moisture.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shell constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken longitudinally therethrough and enlarged to show the details. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the metallic frame used herewith. Fig. l is a section on the line 44, Fig. 2. e
The shell consists of the usual metallic base 10 which is surrounded by an annular flange 11 wherein is fitted the inner end of the paper tube 12, the shell also being provided with the usual paper basel3 within the tube. Extending from the flange 11 is a plurality of strips 14 which are pressed in the surface of the paper tube 12 so that the same lie flush with the surface of the tube. Connecting these strips 14 are hoops 15, there being preferably one of these hoops Specification of Letters Patent.

at the center of the shell where the wad over the paper is placed while the other is at the end of the shell where the wad over the shot is placed. These loops are likewise embedded flush with the surface of the shell so that they do not cause any projections thereon.
When the shell is constructed in accordance with the above arrangement the swelling of the wads which is what causes a shell to swell and stick in a gun under the influence of moisture or the like will be prevented since the metallic bands will keep the same from expanding.
The shell is paper shell reinforced by metal framework so that it is lighter than the regular metallic shell while at the same time is highly eflicient on account of the reinforcement.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the kind described, a paper body, a metallic base having a flange therearound within which said body is engaged, a plurality of longitudinal straps extending from said flange, and spaced loops connecting said straps.
2. In a device of the kind described, a paper body, a metallic base having a flange therearound within which said body is engaged, a plurality of longitudinal straps extending from said flange, and spaced hoops engaging said straps, said straps and hoops being embedded flush with the surface of the paper body.
' In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES J. SOlVARDS. WVitnesses:
WALTER P. SETRIGHT, HENRY MoBRmE.
