Description

J. R. SAUNDERS.
CIGARETTE MOUTH-PIECE.
Patented March. 20, 1877.
ATTORNEY WITN ESSE S gwlzmoa 1 W. v m M JAMES R. SAUNDERS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGARETTE MOUTH-PIECES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,643, dated March 20, 1877; application filed March 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES R. SAUNDERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Cigarette Mouth-Pieces; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which--' Figure 1 represents. the blank or strip of paper from which the device is made. Fig. 2 represents thesame spirally wound, showing the construction of the conical portion; and Fig. 3 represents the mouth-piece complete.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A strip of paper or other suitable material is first cutwith parallel sides, as shown in Fig. 1, and then rolled upon a mandrel whose diameter is equal to the smallest internal diameter of the mouth piecc when completed. The external end of the strip is then secured by means of an adhesive substance. A coneshaped mandrel ota length and diameter equal to the aperture desired is then inserted in the central opening, and several of the interior coils are forced outward a suificient distance to produce the cone shape and spiral construction shown. To retain the several layers in -'this position the interior surface is coated with a suitable adhesive solution, which hardens by exposure. I
I am aware that a strip of paper has been out with a beveled side and wound into a spiral form to produce a central smoke-passage;
but such device has been applied in a reversed position, and in connection with other essential parts, to form a complete mouth-piece, and 1 do not, therefore, claim such construction; but I What I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A complete mouth-piece formed of a single strip of paper or other suitable. material, cut withparallel sides and formed with a coneshaped portion spirally wound, substantially in the manner described.
JAMES R. SAUNDERS.
