Description

v wad, F, is arranged across the forward endof Aretiren STATES -JOHN H. BRO\VN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARTRI DGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 389,496, ,dated'September 11, 1883,.
' Appnanon met May is. was. Striano. 214,083. (No moda.) 'A
To @ZZ whom, it may concern: Beit known that I, JOHN H. BnoWN, of New New York, in the .county and State. of New York, `have invented a certain new and useful Improvement-in Cartridges, of which'the Yfolvembodying my improvement'.` Fig. 2 isa transverse section of the sama-taken at the plane of the dotted-'line :t Fig. l. Fig. 3 is 'a central longitudinal section of another'cartridge embodying my improvement and illustrating a modified form of the improvement. Fig. 4 is atransyerse section .taken at the plane of the dotted line y' y, Fig. 8.
Similar letters of reference designate correspondingparts in all the figures.
A designates the shell of the cartridge. It
I' may be made of paper or'any other suitable material. The rear end is closedbya metallic shell, B, in which a cap, C, is shown as any suitable construction.
.D designates compressed powder.
E designates loosepowder. -1 -Thecompressed powder, preferably, amounis to abouttwo-thirds of the charge in the exam-l ple of the improvement illustrated by Figs. 1
" and 2. The' compressed powderis in the form Y of a hollowcylinderorring whose exterior fits in the rear end of the shell.-
der, E, in this example of the improvement,` lills the space within the hollow cylinder or` snugly within the interior of the shell A. and
ring of compressed powder. In this example of the improvement'shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a of the shellis represented as crimped or turned inwardly to secure the wad H in place.
In the other example of the improvement (shown in Figs'. 3 and 4) it will be seen that'the loose powder not 'only iills theospace within the hollow cylinder or ring of compressed powd'cr,bnt also iills some of the-space in theshell hd then pointout the novel fea`1 `tures inthe claims.' l
The loose pow- 'Beyond this wad I have.V
secure by Letters -Patent, is-
, be about the size of the interior of the hollow cylinder or ring of compressed powder. The
loose powder extends through this wad andin advance of the wad,` as well as in advance 'of the compressed powder. Forward lof the loosev powderisawad, F. Beyond the Wad F,I have I have shown a wad, H. The extreme forwardend lof the cartridge-shell ishown as bent or crimped. inwardly to `secure this wad H in place. Preferably a thin shell, J, will be i-n- -serted 'between the'yinner surfaceoi thehollow cylinder or ring of compressedpow'der and the This shell may be ma ile of,4
loose powder. paper, or a thin film or shell of shellac applied to the-inner surface 'of the hollow cylinder or ring ofcompressed powder may be used.
By means of my improvement a better comcured, and the recoil from the-disoharge ol the powder will be lighter, owing',` to theliazzt that the powder will be consumed more grad-- ually, because the loose powder will' be,burned lfirst and the compressed powder. will not be with shot; but I do not'wish to restrict my iniprovement. to such a cartridge.
The compressed powder may belcompressed before being inserted inthe shell of the cartridge or ,whilein the shell; In the latter case vit-will be necessary to sustain the shell by 1means ofan outer die or holder during the act of compressing the powder.
'shown shot, G, arranged. Forward of the shot .65,
'bustion of the charge of powderwill'be scf- What I claim as my invention, and desire to 1. In a cartridge, the combination ofa shell,j ai cylindrical block of vcompressed powder adapted to fit and slide within the base of the projectile-chamber seated within the shell in frontof the explosive section of the charge, substantially as set forth.
'2. In a. cartridge, the combination of a shell, a cylinder or ring' of compressed powder at the base of the shell, loose powder within and in front of th'e cylinder or'riug of compressed powder, and a projectile-@hammer in fronts of the powder charge, substantially as set forth.
3. A cartridge having@ charge of powder, consisting, part-1y, of n hollow oyli nder or ri ng of compressed powder, uncompressed powder' within said hollow cylinder orV ring, a wad arranged forward of the hollow cylinder or ring of compressed powder and haviugan opening coinciding with the interior of such hollow lI5 Cylinder or ring, nud uncompressed powder forward of said wad, substantially as ,speeed .JOHN H. BROWN.
