W. E. FITCH.
BACK 0R LINING FOR FIREPLAOES. I No. 480,322. Patented Aug. 9, 1892.
Jnvenior- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM E. FITCH, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
BACK OR LINING FOR FIREPLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,322, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed February 24, 1892. Serial N 422,670. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. FITCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Backs or Linings for Fireplaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
One object of this invention is to facilitate the setting of the back or lining of a fireplacegrate, so as to permit the use of less-skilled workmen than is commonly necessary and at the same time to insure good work.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the ready renewal of the top when warped or burned.
The invention consists of the rear and side walls, preferably cast in one piece and having an opening for the tile, combined with a top made as a separate frame attachable to the rear and side walls and provided with a direct and an indirect damper and a cross-piece, which said dampers and cross-piece are removable at pleasure, all as I will proceed now more particularly to set forth and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a top View.
The rear wall a and side walls 1) are cast in one piece, by preference, and contain a filleted opening 0 for the reception of the tile d, which tile may be in one or more pieces and bound in place by the metal strap e, which is bolted or fastened atf to the forward ends of the side walls. The jambs g and arch h may be of usual or approved construction. The top comprises a frame 71 of essentially the crosssectional outline of the rear and side walls and front, as shown, and has the flange '5 to fit in the arch, and this frame is bolted, as at j, or otherwise fastened to the lining or back. The dampers 7t and Z are secured to the frame 41 in any approved manner, and the said dampers are of any approved construction. A cross-piece m spans the frame '5 and is bolted to it. This cross-piece being removable may be readily replaced when warped, burned, or otherwise impaired. By making the top in the form of a frame with the removable crosspiece and dampers and the back otherwise in one piece the said back or lining may be readily set and by comparatively unskilled labor and the workmen can reach up through the top in order to plaster up the arch and to connect the fastening-in Wires, thus greatly simplifying the setting of the grate and reducing the cost thereof very considerably.
The grate n may be of any approved construction and so, also, may be the other and undescribed portions seen in the drawings.
What I claim is- A back or lining for fireplaces, composed of rear and side walls and a removable top, which comprises a frame adapted to be bolted to the walls of the back or lining, a cross-piece detachably secured to the frame, and dampers also detachably connected with said frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, A.D. 1.892.
WILLIAM E. FITCH. \Vitnesses:
E. C. NEWBOLD, W. '1. HALE.
