I! b all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT HOWDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the: county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Dome-Dampers and Chimney-Throats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chimney throats and dampers therefor and has for its principal object the construction of a throat, which is adapted to be built into the brickwork whereby the most efficient shape is obtained for the chimney throat eliminating smoking of the fireplace and at the same time making it efficient in regards to heating.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for regulating the draft and equally distributing the same over the entire width of the fireplace, and

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein illustrated and more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to corresponding parts by the same numerals of reference, 1 denotes in general my improved combination dome damper and chimney throat, consisting of the dome 2. the width of which is equal to that of the fireplace, and which is air Specification of Letters Patent.

cular in shape around the upper portion as at 3. The portion onto which the chimney or flue is built is denoted by 4, and may be square or rectangular in shape, depending on the character of the flue. This portion 4 is flared outwardly with respect to the width as shown at 5 and contracted with reference to its depth as shown at 6, which arrangement gives a substantially uniform draft across the entire width of the throat.
This contracted portion is curved forwardly as at 12 and rests on the curved rearward extension 13 of the dome, to which it is fastened by one or more bolts 9. The dome portion .is continued rearwardly pro viding a base on which the portion 4; rests and each portion is provided with lugs 8 by which they are bolted together.
Adjacent the upper part of portion 4 is formed a lateral flange 7 on which the adjacent brickwork is supported and on which the flue lining may be erected.
In order to prevent the entire weight of the chimney from resting on the front of flange 7, I insert an angle bar 10 in the brickwork on each side of the fireplace and support the outer edge of flange 7 on this angle. I also provide certain ribs 11 between the curved portion of flue 4 and the upper surface of the dome 3, serving to transfer part of the weight resting on the front of flange 7' onto the dome 3.
\Vithin the dome portion of the chimney throat I provide a removable apron 14, which is arranged to deflect the draft into the upper part of the dome portion 3. Th1s apron is provided with the lower straight portion lt and the upper curved portion 11' eccentric with the top of the dome so as to narrow the draft opening at this point. The apron hangs on the upper edge of member 15 and is held in position by members 23 pivotally attached to the end walls 3 of dome, as shown at 24, and exerting pressure against lugs 25 on the front of apron 14. A bracket 15 is fastened to each of the side walls 3 within the dome 3, being inclined in such an angle that the area is constricted toward the top of the dome. These brack ets are provided with the ribs 17 around the edges thereof and on the back are provided with seats 18, in which the damper 16 is pivotally mounted. Each end of the damper is provided with a. circular lug 19, which lugs are seated within 18, the recesses pivotally mounting the damper so that it may be swung backwardly until it contacts with the curved portion 13, thus entirely closing the draft opening. The end of apron lat when the latter is in position lies just. above the top edge of the damper and so prevents the latter from lifting upwardly.
On the front of damper 16 are provided ears 20 between which is pivotally mounted the adjusting bar 21, this bar having ratchet teeth 22 along the lower edge thereof, which engages the lower edge of an opening in the apron 14 thereby holding the damper in any desired position.
A roller curtain 26 is provided, which is used in starting the fire or closing the fireplace when notin use. This curtain consists 'o'fa plurality of narrow bars 27 having the bent ends 30 all bars being attached to one or more flexible strips 28. On the side Walls of the dome are attached the curved grooved members 29, which engage the bent ends 30 providing a I guide to cause these members to slide within the dome and to prevent the 1 heat from warping the members and pulling 'Gopies of this patent maybe obtained for even with the face of the projection. The brickwork is then continued upward around the tile or metal lining which may be attachedto the member a. In this manner it is only necessary for the chimney builder to note the opening and depth of the fireplace and the projection of the mantel from the face of the'plaster. Such features as the chimney throat dome and damper arrangement being successfully worked out 1n my device insure a fireplace, whlch will be smokeless and satisfactory in use. WVhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that minor changes may be made in detail and design without departing from the scope of the claim.
What I claim and wish to cover by Letters Patent is A combined dome and chimney throat in combination with a fireplace, comprising five cents each, by'addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington,-D. G.
