H. o. BASGOM. HEATING STOVE.
Patented Aug. 28; 1883.
N. remis, Pnmumngm.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo H. CLAY BASOOM, OF TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE N. S. VEDDER PATTERN VORKS, BASCOM, GALBRAITH St OO., OF SAME PLACE.
HEATING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,953, dated August 28, 1883.
Application filed April 27, 1582.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. CLAY Basson, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to` the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-n Figure lis aperspective view, from the rear, of my improved stove; and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the rear side of the same upon a line passing from front to rear.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the iigures.
The design of my invention is to enable an ordinary direct-draft heating-stove to be easily and with little expense converted into a revertible-flue stove, and to this end it consists in the means whereby a direct-draft stove, complete in itself, may be converted into a diving-flue stove, which is also complete in exterior finish and appearance, substantially as hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the bottom plate, B the ash-pit section, C the fuelchamber section, D the `combustionchamber section, E the `magazine-section, and F the top plate, of a heating-stove of usual construction. Fitted upon or attached to the rear side of the stove is a luc-section, G, which preferably has the form in horizontal sectionV shown in Fig. l, and extends from its connection with the combustion,- chamber D to the bottom' plate, A, at which latter point the detachable bottom plate, g, of said section has such form and dimensions as to `make it an apparent continuation or rearward extension of said bottom plate. 'The upper portion of the section G opposite the combustion-ch amber conforms to the style and Renewed July 7, 1883. (No model.)
l shape of the parts with which it comes into contact. Within the section Gis a siphoniiue, g, of ordinary construction, which at one 4 5 end communicates with the combustion-chamber and at its other end with a pipe-collar, g2, while between its front side and the ash-pit section B is a connecting-flue, H, that is controlled by a damper, and operates to check the 5o draft and to convey the dust from said ashpit to said flue g while ashes are being shaken into the ash-pit. The flue-section described materially increases the heating capacity of the stove, is easily constructed and applied, 5 5 and by its use with the detachable bottom plate, g, the necessity for special bottom-plate patterns is avoided, onebottoin plate answering equally well for a direct-draft stove and a revertible-lue stove.
I am aware that heating and cooking at tachments have before been used upon the rear sides of stoves having diving and ascending ues, and do not claim the saine, broadly.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and 6 5 merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- In combination with a heating stove which has no diving-Hue, but is complete and adapted is capable of attachment to the rear side of the same, and when thus attached incloses the exit-tine and converts said stove into a divingflue stove and forms a rearward extension of the projecting bottom plate, substantially as 7 5 and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this I7 th day of March, 1882.
H. CLAY BASOOM.

WM. J. MACDONALD, L. J. TniEssER.
