I FURNITURE LEG FASTENING. No. 479,363. Patented July 19, 1892.

UNITED a STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. HANSON, OF J ANESVILLE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGN OR TO THE HANSON FURNITURE COMPANY, OF WVISOONSIN.
FURNITURE-LEG FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,363, dated July 19, 1892.
Application filed January 23, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at J anesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wiscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Joints; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which IO it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to articles of furniture of various kinds having a main frame supported by legs or standards, and has for its objects to provide a joint whereby said I5 legs or standards may be detached from the main frame for storage or transportation and adapted to permit said standards to be readily secured to said frame when desired, forming a strong and firm connection with the frame. This I accomplish by themeans illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention applied to a table inverted. Fig. 2 is a sectional side View of the corner of the main frame of a table inverted. Fig. 3 is a side view of an inverted leg or standard detached from the main frame. Fig. 4 is a plan view of upper end of same. .Fig. 5 is a perspective viewof a locking-pin detached. Fig. dis a horizontal cross section of said locking-pin.
As illustrated in the drawings, A represents the top plate of a table or stand secured to horizontal bed-pieces B. The inner sides of the meeting ends of the bed-pieces B are provided with offsets b, the inner edges 1) of which are preferably beveled vertically and horizontally forthe purpose hereinafter mentioned. These inner meeting ends of the bed-pieces B, with their offsets 1), form a socket for the upper end of the standard or leg 0. The sides of the standard facing the inner edges of the offsets b are preferably provided with vertical grooves c inclined in cross-sec tion, adapted to receive awedge-shapedlocking-pin D.
The standard 0 is secured to the main frame by forcing the locking-pins D between the inner edges b of the offsets and the grooved-sides of the standard, which presses the opposite side of the standard firmly against its adjacent bed-piece. In addition to this the locking-pins D perform another Serial No. 419,071- (No model.)
function when the edge I) of the offsetb and the opposite wall of the grooves c are beveled horizontally, as shown in the drawings, in that the locking-pins by overlapping the beveled edge of the standard 0 presses that portion of the standard laterally against the nearest portion of the bed-piece B. Thus 6c each locking-pin exerts a pressure in two directions when the parts are constructed as last described, thereby holding said standard firmly in place, and the horizontal bevel of the inner edge I) of the offset 1) enables said edge to overlap the locking-pin and prevent IateraIdiSplacement of the same. The standard may be detached from the main frame for storage or transportation by simply removing the locking-pins.
WVhen the standards are to be permanently secured to the main frame, the pins may be coated with glue before driving them in place.
Although I prefer the construction already described for the reasons stated, the vertical 7 5 grooves c of the standard 0 may be omitted, if desired, without departing from my invention.
In the construction shown herein the inner edge of the offsets b is shown beveled 8o vertically, while the grooves of the standard are not. These constructions may be reversed, however, if desired. I do not desire, moreover, to be limited to the specific construction oflocking-pins shown herein. Other means having similar capabilities may be substituted without departing from my invention.
\Vhat I claim is In a furniture-joint, the combination, with horizontal bed-pieces meeting at an angle and provided on theirinnersides with offsets having their inner edges inclined vertically and horizontally, of a detachable standard provided with vertical grooves facing said off- 5 sets and inclined horizontally, and Wedgeshaped locking-pins secured between said grooves and offsets, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY M. HANSON.
