UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PRESTON B. LEE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 479,285, dated July 19, 1892. Application tiled July 14, 1891. Serial No. 399,507. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, PRESTON B. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a glove having bridgepieces connected at their opposite edges to the lower ends of adjacent finger-stalls, as fully set forth hereinafter, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a back view of a glove embodying my improvement. Fig. 3 is a detached view showing a piece from which a linger-stall is made. Figs. 4 and 5 are palm and back views showinga construction in which the bridge-pieces are parts of the palm-section.
The palm A and the back B may be cut to any suitable shape and formed each in one piece or in sections, and the fingers C may be formed each of a single piece u, of the shape shown in Fig. 3, connected with the body portion, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or one section l of each iinger-that is, the back section-may form part of the back piece or pieces, the remaining section 2 of each finger beinga separate piece. Whatever may be the construction of these parts, those parts which form the lower ends of the 1ingers,instead or" being connected the end of one inger with the end of the adjacent finger to form a V shape or sharp notch, are connected with an intermediate bridge-piece D7 which bridge-piece may be a part of the palm-piece or a part of one of the pieces to constitute the back extending from the palm to the back and serving as a bridge or connection between each pair of fingers. Thus, as shown in Figs. l and 2,each bridge-piece D is scwed along the line at each side to the edge of one of the finger-stalls and along the line y to the back B and along the liney to the palm A, thereby connecting the adjacent finger-stalls at their lower ends -and permitting the same to be readily distended, as is desirable in that class of gloves used for handling reins or by workingmen in operating tools of any kind. It will be seen Fig. 2 is a palm view..
that the lines w are practically parallel to each other, so as to form a very strong connection across the notch, and when there are any strains tending to pull the ingers apart, as shown in Fig. 4, there will be less tendency to rip than when the vertical seams converge to a suitable point between the fingers, as in ordinary gloves, and that by thus using the bridge-pieces D, I am enabled to avoid the use of overlying pieces above the ordinary seams at the notches, thus dispensing with the necessity of sewing suchV seams and avoiding the clumsy construction resulting in such cases.
The bridge pieces or sections D therefore constitute', practically, a part of the glovebody, so that there is but one thickness of material at the notch. The bridge-pieces D may be separate pieces, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or they each may be formed by a lap or extension of the palm A, as shown in Figs. 4 and The thumb-stall E may be formed and connected with the bodyin any suitable manner.
Vithout limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown, I claiml. A glove having its adjacent linger-stalls separated at the base and the openings thus formed closed by vbridge-pieces completely s'panning the opening from front to rear and stitched at their side edges to the lower edges .of the adjacent sides of the inger-stalls,sub
stantially as described.
2. A glove having the adjacent finger-stalls separated at the base and the openings so formed closed by bridge-pieces D, each formed by an extension of the palm extending from front to back between two of the finger-stalls and each stitched at its side edges to the lower edges of the adjacent sides of the linger-stalls, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PRESTON B. LEE.
