IIIIITEE ETATE PATENT ELMORE EDWARD SABIN, OF EAST OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
GLOVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMonn EDWARD SABIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves and more particularly in that class of gloves which are made from leather or other suitable material cut and sewed in form.
The object of the invention is to provide a glove of this general character of simple and improved construction in which a minimum number of pieces is required whereby economy is efiected in the cutting and sewing of the glove and a novel and improved arrangement of seams is afforded giving rise to increased strength and durability.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts of the improved glove whereby certain important advantages are attained and the glove is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise adapted for convenient use as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1. is a plan view of the cut out blank from which the main or body portion of the glove is formed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the smaller or auxiliary part of the glove. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the back of the glove showing the location of certain seams, Fig. l is a similar view of the palm showing the location of the seams forming the thumb, as viewed from the palm with the thumb turned down.
In the embodiment illustrated is shown a glove composed of two parts, a main or body portion 1 and a smaller auxiliary finger portion 2, the outline of these parts being clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The main or body portion 1 of the glove comprises in integral form all of the fourchettes or finger members for the improved glove with the exception of the outer or back member for the third or ring finger which latter member is formed from the auxiliary Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 11,
portion 2 which in the course of manufacture Patented June 1, 1909.

is joined to the body portion 1 as will be hereinafter fully described.
The main or body portion 1 is to be centrally and transversely folded as indicated by the dotted line 3 in Fig. 1 to produce the palm or back portions or plies 5 and 6, the line of folding extending centrally along of the fourth or little finger 4, one member of which is thus carried upon each of the said plalm and back portions or plies 5 and 6 of the g ove.
Up on the palm portion 6 of this improved glove are integrally formed the inner or palm members of the fourchettes 7, 8, 9, and 10, of the first, second, third and fourth fingers respectively, and the inner and outer fourchettes 11 and 12 of the thumb; the finger members being arranged adjacent to each other and projecting from the same edge of the body portion 1. The back or outer four chette 7 a for the first or index finger also proj ects from the same edge of the body portion 1 and is integrally connected with the inner or palm member of the aforesaid finger and is adapted to be folded over on the dotted line 7 (see Fig. 1) to bring it into position on the back or outer face of the glove. The lower edge of the fourchette 7 is provided with a depending tongue 7 designed to be stitched to the transversely extending edge arranged at the base of the outer half of the middle finger member to be described. Formed integrally with the outer or back ply 5 are the outer or back fourchettes 13, 14, of the fourth and second or middle fingers, the fourth finger fourchette 18 being integral with the inner fourchette 10 of said little finger and is foldable on the dotted line 3 as above described the free edges being designed to be stitched together. Between the members 13 and 14 is a space 15 having its lower edge 16 curved upwardly as shown in Fig. 1 and to which the lower edge of the outer fourchette of the third or ring finger formed by the auxiliary member 2 is stitched when the parts are assembled said part 2 being provided with tongues 2 and 2 and the cut out portions 2 and 2 arranged adjacent said tongues and designed to be connected with the inclined edge 14 of the middle finger member 14 and with the edge 15 of the little finger member 18 to provide a properly shaped finger. This extra member 2 is stitched along its side edges to the corresponding edges of the inner fourchette 9 of the ring finger.
An upwardly inclined edge 7 is formed at the base of the fourchette 7 1 extending from the free edge thereof to the base of the tongue 7 and is adapted to be connected with the inclined edge 14 at the base of the back portion 14: of the second finger. The curved cut out edge 7 e is designed to fit and be stitched to the curved edge 5 formed on the back ply 5 op osite the edge 14 at the base of the fourc ette 14.
The thumb is cut as is shown in Fig. 1 and comprises the inner or palm fourchette 11 having one side made integral with the outer fourchette 12 thereof said fourchette 11 being disconnected at its base from the palm ply thus leaving an edge 17 to which the upper portion of the side 11 of the flap or gore 20 made integrally with the fourchette 12 is designed to be connected, preferably by stitching. The other edge 21 of this gore 20 is connected with the lower free edge 11' of the fourchette 11 of the lower outer curved edge 22 and is stitched to the curved edge 7 b at the base of the fourchette 7. The inner straight edge 23 of the gore 20 is stitched to the edge 5' at the free edge of the back ply 5 and the curved edge 5 of said ply is stitched to the edge 5 formed opposite the edge 23 on the gore 20. The several palm and back fourchettes for the first second third and fourth fingers are stitched together along their side and top edges in the ordinary way, the auxiliary portion 2 being stitched to the back ply as above described.
By this arrangement it will be evident that ulpon the palm portion or ply 6 are formed t e palm members or fourchettes for each of the several fingers and the thumb of the glove also the back or outer fourchette for the thumb and for the first finger while upon the outer or back ply 5 there are produced only the members 13 and 14 for the alternate finger portions of the glove, that is of the fourth and second fingers. The intervening space 15 between these alternating fingers or portions being designed to receive the auxiliary member 2 which forms the back portion or fourchette for the third or ring finger.
In joining the two members to produce the glove the several palm and back fourchettes for the fourth, second and first fingers are sewed in the ordinary way, the auxiliary portion 2 being stitched along the edge 16 to produce a seam extending across the knuckle of the third finger as is shown in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
