DESK ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,565, dated July 12, 1892.

Application filed February 9, 1891. Serial No. 380,807. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS C. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments for Telephones; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in desk attachments for telephones; and it consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, the essential features of which being pointed out particularly in the claims.

The object of the invention is to provide'a desk for telephones that may be readily attached thereto and will afford a broad writing-surface and that may be folded together, so as to be outiof the way when not in use. This object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a telephone with my improved desk attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the desk. Fig. 3 is a section as taken on dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the desk folded, the dotted position showing the leaf extended.- Fig. 4 is a section on dotted line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the letters of reference, A indicates the battery-box of a telephone, on the top of which my improved desk is adapted to be secured. Said desk is formed of the two parts B and C. A

B indicates the body of the desk,and C an extension-leaf that is hinged thereto, as shown at ct, and is adapted to fold over onto the upper face of the part B, as shown in Fig. 3.

Secured to the under face of the body B of the desk are the brackets D, clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4, which are provided with the inwardly-,projecting end portions c, carrying the thumb-screws e. The flange c' of the top of the battery-boxA extends between the projecting end portion c of the brackets D and the under face of the desk, as shown in Fig. 4, and is secured by the thumb-screws c, that bear against the under face of said flange,

' whereby the desk is firmly attached to the top of the box A,but may be readily removed by loosening the screws c.

E indicates a sliding bail that formsa support for the hinged leaf C. The parallel portions b of said bail pass loosely through the lugs d, secured to the under face of the desk and through the brackets D, which construction permits said bail to be drawn out to support the leaf C when extended, as shown I n Fig. 2, and shoved back when said leaf 1s folded up, as shown in Fig. 3 and by dotted lines in Fig. 2.

F indicates a clamp that is actuatedby the,

coiled spring h. Said clamp is located at the upperedge of the desk and serves to retain the paper in place thereon, on which any memorandum or communication may be written. The staple or screw-eye t in said clamp affords means for raising it for the purpose of inserting the paper thereunder. f

H indicates any suitable fabric covering, which is placed upon the upper face of the desk.

It will now be apparent that by drawing outward the bail E and extending the leaf C a broad writing-surface is afforded, as well as a support for the arm when writing, and when not in use the leaf may be folded upon the part B, and the supporting-bailE shoved back, when the desk will occupy but a small compass. i

Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In combination with the battery-box of a telephone, the desk attachment comprising the body having the, extension-leaf hinged thereto, the brackets and lugs attached to the under face of the body, the bail slidingly mounted on said brackets and lugs, and screws passing through said brackets.

2. In combination with the body having the hinged extension, the brackets and lugs on the under face of the body, the bail slidingly mounted on said brackets and lugs, and the thumb-screws in said brackets.
