IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,010, dated April 11, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE It. KNAPP, of Vinton, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Support, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my book-rest, partly in section, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same on line 0 c, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention relates to an improved book rest, for the purpose of supporting the arm steadily in position when writing in lodgers, account, and other books of large size; and the invention consists of a book-rest, having shoulders of difl'erent sizes at both sides of the hand-rest and a sliding extension-rest for the arm.

In the drawing, A represents the blade,

which is made thicker at the butt and taper-- ing toward the point. The rest is inserted in the customary manner into the book, and provided with offset or shoulders B at both sides for resting the hand, one offset being about three-fourths of an inch in thickness, the other one-fourth of an inch. The double offsets admit the use of the rest with nearly equal advantage in every part of the book. The double offsets bear also on the upper and lower edges of the leaves, and retain thereby the rest steadier in the book without allowing it to follow the motion of the arm.

The offsets B are arranged with an extension, O, that slides by guide-rods a in longitudinal perforations b of the ofi'sets B. The extension 0 serves for giving a rest to the arm, and may be drawn out to the required distance so that the bottom lines on a page may be written in the same steady handwriting, and with the same facility as upper lines.

The extension 0 is prevented from getting detached from the offsets B by an end collar, a, being stopped by the narrow part of the guide perforations, as shown in Fig. 1.

The improved book-rest furnishes thus a more convenient and better support for the hand and arm, and admits'of the neat-er and easier keeping up of account-books, &c., of all kinds.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A book-rest, provided with shoulders or offsets of different height, at both sides of the blades, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A book-rest, having a sliding extension for supporting the arm, substantially as and for the purpose described.
