N0. 478,38. Patented July 5, 1892. v
I By- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 7
CHARLES C. KROUSE, HARRY E. MYERS, AND CHARLES L. GIRARD, OF WI LLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.478,338, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed October 6, 1891. Serial No. 407,918. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES C. KROUSE, HARRY E. MYERS, and CHARLES L. GIRARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Williamsport,in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Back Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to suspenders, and particularly to the back end connections; and its object is to providea pivot connection between the suspender-back and the back suspender-ends which will give both a swinging and lateral motion.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 shows the suspender-back with the ends connected thereto ready for use. Fig- 2 is a detached view of the suspender-end, showing the pivot-plate. Fig. 3 shows the outside of end portions of the suspender-back; Fig. 4, the inside end portions of the suspender-back. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the L-shaped pieces partially bent to receive the suspenders. Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof just as it is stamped out. Figs. 7 and S are modifications of the suspender-plates. Fig. 9 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line a m, Fig. 1.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts throughout the several figures.
In the drawings, A denotes one strap, and B the other part, of the suspender proper. The ends of these straps are cut L-shaped, so as to accommodate the L-shaped metal plates 0 and D. The outside portion of the plate Othat is, the portion which is turned over upon the fabric -is provided with teeth a, while the inner portion is formed of a lateralcurved flange 0, having an aperture 1). The plate D is of exactly the same construction, but covers the end of the fabric in a different position-that is, the L-shaped portion is on the back of the fabric while the curved plate is upon the front thereofand the two curved plates are thus brought face to face with the connecting-plate E, pivoted between them by means of the pivot c, passing through the aperture b and hole (1 in the plate E. By this arrangement a considerable pivot joint is made between the plates 0, D, and E. The
free end of the plate E extends downward below the plates C and D and its end is bent or turned over to form the' pivot-bearing for the link-ring F, which is connected to the suspender-end G by means of the clamp H, which forms the subject-matter of a separate application filed herewith.
In the modification shown in Fig. 7 the plates 0 are formed with a curved bottom e and a straight upright portion or side f. The teeth a, may or may not extend entirely around the edges of this plate, and the flanges cconnect the two ends of the plate 0 by curving from one end to the other. As shown in Fig. 8, the plate 0 is U-shaped and has the same curved flange c. It will be observed that when the suspender portions A and B have been connected through the medium of the plate E to the suspender-end the plates 0 and D present a solid V-shaped connecting portion, which not only gives a smooth metal edge and ends to the suspender portions A and B, but forms a simple, strong, and durable pivotbearing for the plate E without passing the pivot through the fabric, and at the same time completely conceals the pivot. By this arrangement the suspender-end has a double swinging motion as well as a lateral motion, and the end portions A and B also have a lateral motion upon the pivot.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
The combination, in a pair of suspenderstraps, of a back attachment comprising the plate 0, provided with teeth which engage the front of one of 'the straps, the plate D, also provided with teeth which engage the back of the other strap, each plate having a lateral flange which covers the opposite side of the straps to that engaged by the said teeth, leaving the flanges face to face, the pivot c, and the plate E, pivoted to and between the said flanges, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES C. KROUSE. HARRY E. MYERS. CHARLES L. GIRARD. Witnesses:
CLARENCE E. SPROUT, RossER THOMAS.
