POTTER, of Boston. in the county of Suffolk and State of l Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, 5 have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear," and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in explain- IO ing its nature, in which- Figurel is a perspectiveview of a buckle containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the end of a part of the jaw. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the end of a part of the buckle back or body. Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of the buckle, and Figs. 6 and 7 sections on the line w x of Fig.- l.

The invention relates especially to the speciic means herein described for securing the jaw of the buckle to the body or back thereof. Referring to the drawings, c represents the body or back of the buckle. It may have any suitable shape and be provided with aslot, af, through which the end of the strap may be passed in fastening the buckle in place. It may have in addition thereto a hook, such as described in former patents granted to me on this subject, or any other suitable form. This body is struck up from a sheet-metal blank of suitable shape and having ears a2 integral therewith. These ears are kept at right angli?J tO the body or back of the buckle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and a pivot, a3, is formed upon the inner side of each by striking from the metal of the ear a section of the central portion thereof', as represented-that is, the portion of the central part of the ear is cut or punched upon its sides and end nearest the back and turned inwardly therefrom, so that 4o its point of connection with the ear is near the outer end of the ear, and the pivot is thus provided from the body of the ear located in the proper position, and the strength of the ear is not diminished. The jaw b of the buckle is much like the jaw of ordinary buckles of this description, with the exception that the ears b thereof are provided with holes b2, through which the pivots which project inward from the ears a2 of the back extend. Of course it isv not necessary that the pivots be connected 5o with the ears near the upper end or top thereof, as shown by the drawings, because they can project from either side thereof or from a point near the center or ,under section thereof without departing from the spirit of the `in 55 vention; but in such case it would be necessary to have the ear somewhat longer than shown in the drawings. The ends of the pivot may be turned downward toward the body or back of the buckle,if desired,as shown in Figs. 5 and 7, and thereby lock the jaw and backor body securely together, so that lateral strain upon the jaw or back shall not disengage the jaw from the pivots. This construction is cheap and strong and desirable, in that the pivots, instead of projecting outwardly from the jaw through the holes in the ears of the back, extend inwardly from the back, and are thereby so located that they cannot engage with or catch the clothing, and as the ears of 7o the back are made curved and rounded, as are also the outer edges of the jaw, avery smooth and rounded finish is obtained upon the outer edges of the buckle.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a buckle, the combination ofthe back or body having the ears a", from'lwhich the pivots a3 are formed by striking or bending inward the portion of the body of the ear described, with the jaw b, having the ears b', through holes in which the pivots ai extend, all substantially as and for the purposes speci-- lied.

2. The combination, in a buckle, ofthe jaw b, having the ears b, provided with holes b2, and the body a, having the ears a, provided with extensions or pivots a3, formed therefrom, as described, and extended through said holes and then bent or curved downwardly to lock the jaw and back together, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
