UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
MANING F. TEN EYCK, OF CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY.
sHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,973, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed January 9, 1892. Serial No. 417,545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MANING F. TEN EYCK, a citizen of the United States,residing at Clifton, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Shutter-Fastener, of which the following is a specification. i
The invention relates to improvements in shutter-fasteners.
The object of the present inventionis to provide a simple and ineXpensive'shutter-fasn ener and means for conveniently releasing the shutter when it is desired to close the same.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portionof a window provided with a shutter-fastener constructed in accordance with this invention, the shutter being partially Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View, the shutter being open. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the latch.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.
1 designates a gravity latch or fastener comprising a horizontal bar 2, which is provided at each end with a beveled hook and a slide 3, which is vertically disposed and is arranged in a groove 4 of a window-shutter 5a. The slide is adapted to move vertically to allow the horizont-al hook-bar to engage a keeper 5, arranged on the front wall, and a catch 6, arranged on the window-sill and to be disengaged from the same. The hook-bar extends transversely through the shutter and is arranged in slots 7 and 8 ot' theinner and outer plates 9 and 10, which form guides for the horizontal hook-bar, and the outer plate of which secures the slide in the vertical groove of the shutter. The outer plate 10 is provided near its lower end with a horizon tal extension 11, which, when the shutter is open, is adapted to engage a projection 12 of the keeper 5 to prevent the shutter being lifted oft the pintles by a heavy wind. The keeper 5 is provided with a horizontal loop to receive the outer hook of the gravity-latch and the projection 12 is arranged at the outer end of the` loop. The gravity-latch is lifted out ot engagement with the keeper by an angle-lever 13, which is fulcrumed on the shutter, and has the outer end of one arm arranged beneath the horizontal hook-bar, and the other arm is provided at its end with a handle 14, arranged near the inner end of the shutter, within easy reach, and adapted to be depressed to lift the latch to enable a shutter to be closed without necessitating a person leaning far out a window. When the shutter is closed, the inner hook of the horizontal bar engages a catch or stop 6 and the inner end of the hookbar isk slightly enlarged and is provided with an opening, by means of which the latch may be readily raised to open the shutter. In order to prevent the latch being raised from the outside when the shutter is closed, a button 15 is pivoted at the upper end of the inner plate 9 and is adapted to be turned longitudinally 'of the plate 9 to engage the horizontal hook-bar and prevent the latter being raised.
It will be seen that the shutter-fastener and means for operating the same are simple and .comparatively inexpensive in construction;
that a shutter may be readily closed without necessitating a person leaning far out of the window, and that when the shutter is closed it is securely locked and cannot be opened from the outside.
The combination, with a shutter provided with a vertical groove, ot' a gravity-latch Vmounted on the shutter and composed of a slide arranged in the groove and ahorizontal bar extending through the shutter and provided at each end with a hook, an outer plate secured to the shutter and provided with a slot to receive the bar and having a horizontal flange, and a keeper adapted to be engaged by the hook and the iiange, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MANING F. TEN EYCK. Witnesses:
CHARLES RUST, CHAS. A. BERGEN.
