S. J. RUSSELL.
STEMMING DEVICE FOR FLOWERS. No. 477,704. Patented June 28, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SULLIVAN .I. RUSSELL, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
STEMMING DEVICE FOR FLOWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,704, dated June 28, 1892. Application filed August 22, 1891. Serial No. 403,430. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SULLIVAN J. RUssELL, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Stemming Flowers; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The object of m y invention is to provide a substitute for the tooth-pick and wire usually employed for stemming flowers in making up floral designs which shall be equally cheap and more quickly and easily applied.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved device applied to a flower. Fig. 2 shows the device by itself.
A blank B is preferably cut from pliant sheet metal, such as tin and zinc,.in such shape as to leave a shank 0 corresponding to the tooth-pick commonly employed. I11 order to dispense altogether with the wire which is usually Wropped around the flower-stem and the tooth-pick to secure the two together, whereby much time is consumed, I form the blank at its upper end with a wing D, which may be bent down by the fingers upon the stem of the flower, as indicated in Fig. 1. The blank may be made in any desired weight or stiffness, according to the particular use to which it is to be put, and will be found to save a very large proportion of the time usually occupied in fastening the flowers to tooth-picks or other devices requiring the use of an additional piece of wire.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described stemming device for flowers, consisting of a blank cut or stamped from pliant sheet metal and formed with a shank to constitute an artificial stem and with a laterally-extending wing at the upper end of said shank and integral therewith to grasp the flower-stem, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SULLIVAN J RUSSELL. Witnesses:
W. B. GREELEY, J. SOHWARZKOPF.
