Description
(N9 -1 'A. HOOVER.
HORSESHOE.
No. 477,658. Patented June 28, 1892;
Hihyzssas 195291 051- Frederz'okAHoaven M @yhtfl eAi-imjzys,
/ I r I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK HOOVER, OF ROCKTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,658, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed March 31, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FREDERICK A. HOOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockton, in the county of Olearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Horseshoe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to farriery, and more particularly to a toe-call; for horseshoes, the object of my invention being to provide a toe-calk adapted to be removably applied to the toe of a shoe while the latter is upon the hoof of the horse, whereby said shoe is adapted for slippery roads.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will beparticularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a horseshoe having a calk constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the said calk.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an ordinary horseshoe, in this instance provided at its rear end with the heel-calks 2. The tread of the shoe at its center is provided with a threaded perfora tion 3, adapted to receive the shank or body portion of a screw 4, provided with an enlarged head 5. At each side of the central perforation threaded perforations 6 are also formed in the tread portion of the shoe.
8 designates a pair of toe-call: sections triangular in cross-section and provided at their upper sides with threaded tenons 9, the tenon of one section being provided with a lefthand thread and its companion with a righthand thread. Asimilar disposition of threads is made in the perforations 6. Each of the calks has its inner lower corner cut away, as at 10, forming an angular recess, and the bot toms of these recesses are provided with halfround openings 11. By threading the tenons 9 into the threaded openings 6 the adjacent half-round openings of the sections will combine to form a substantially circular opening in that the adjacent edges of the sections will practically meet.
The two sections when Serial No. 427,256. (No model.)
threaded in position combine to form a sin= gle and eflicient toe-calk. When in position to thus constitute the calk, the screw 4, heretofore mentioned, may bethreaded upwardly through the opposite half-round openings 11 and into the central perforation 3. Zhen in position, the shoulder or head of the screw rests against the bottom of the recesses 10 and prevents any turning of the sections, so as to become loosened or get out of alignment.
It will be seen that the calk provided is efficient, strong, and durable, that the same may be applied to the shoe in ordinary or commen use, and this, too, without the necessity of removing the shoe from the foot, either for the purpose of its application or removal. In applying the calks the same are operated by the thumb and finger, or by any convenient tool, if so desired, and mayin a like manner be removed, the only tool necessarily employed being a common screw-driver for inserting the locking-screw 4 in position.
It will be obvious that all of. the calks maybe made bluntinstead of sharp, as herein shown, whereby the tool is adapted for use in summer.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The shoe provided at the central portion of its tread with a threaded perforation and at opposite sides of the same with perforations, combined with the toe-call: sections each having a threaded tenon on its upper side for taking in the side perforations, said sections having their lower inner corners cut away or recessed, the bottoms of the recesses at their adjacent edges being provided with half round openings, and a screw passed through the openings and into the central perforation of the shoe and having its head taking against the bottom of the recess, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the shoe having the central and oppositely-threaded side perforations located at the toe portion of the tread thereof, of'the triangular-shaped toecalk sections, each provided upon its upper side with a threaded tenon adapted to take into the oppositelythreaded side perforations, said calk-sections having their lower inner corners provided with angular recesses my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in and their meeting edges with half-round openthe presence of two witnesses.
in s, and the headed screw located in the op enings and threaded through the central FREDERICK HOOVER perforation of the shoe, substantially as speoi- Withesses: fied. J. I. PEOPLES,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as E. F. BRUBAKER.
