UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. GODDARD, OF BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,594, dated December 3, I889.
' Application filed August 2, 1889. Serial No. 319,507. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. GODDARD, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Handles, of which the following, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings, is aspecification.
My invention relates to tool-handles for files, screw-drivers, and various other tools which are provided with tangs or shanks to enter the handle; and it consists in a handle made in two parts and provided with a recess extending longitudinally thereof of a width and shape to fit the tang of the tool, and also provided in one or both parts with a deeper recess sunk below the bottom of the main tang-receiving recess, said deeper recess being designed'and adapted to receive the end of the tool-tang bent at right angles to its main body, said two parts of the handle being detachably secured together by means of screws, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure l of the drawings is an elevation of my improved handle applied to a file. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a side elevation and an edge "view of my improved handle without a tool applied thereto. Fig. i is a section through the clamping-screws on line 00 cc of Fig. 3, and showing an elevation of the inner surface of one of the halves of the handle. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line y y on Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is an elevation of the tool-tan g, illustrating how its end portion is bent at right angles to its main body.
In the drawings, A and A are the two halves of the handle, securedtogether by the screws a a a, which pass through smooth holes in the part A and are screwed into threaded holes in the part A, as shown in Fig. 5.
Each of the parts A and A has formed therein a tapered groove or recess b, of a shape to fit the tang of the tool to be used therein. Near the inner ends of said recesses are form ed one or more small recesses c c, sunk below'the bottoms of the recesses 19 b to receive the end of the tang, which is bent at right angles to the main body of said tang, as shown in Fig. 6.
By this construction of the handle a file or other tool having a tapering tang or shank may, be firmly secured in the handle, so that it cannot be acciden tallywithdrawn, said handle being adapted, by virtue of the series of small recesses c c, to fit tools having long or short shanks or tangs, and said handle may be changed from one-tool to another having a similar style of tang.
I am aware of the invention shown and described in the Letters Patent N 0. 377,334, granted to M. Schweizer January 31, 1888, and I do not claim anything shown and described in said patent.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A tool-handle made in two parts detachably secured together by screws, so as to be readily separated and changed from one tool to another, and provided with a longitudinal recess to receive the tang of the tool and a deeper recess to receive the end of said tan g bent at right angles to its main body.
2. A tool-handle made in two parts secured together by screws, each part being provided in its inner face with a longitudinal recess to receive a portion of the thickness of the tang or shank of the tool and a series of small recesses sunk below the bottom of said longitudinal recess and adapted to receive the end portion of said tang bent at right angles to its main body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 29th day of J uly, A. D. 1889.
' GEORGE E. GODDARD.
