'Be it known that 1, JOHN H. Hnnsn- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a horseshoe for aiding horses in gaining an retaining a foot-hold on slippery surfaces such as pavements and the like.

The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a horseshoe body carrying toe and heel calks which can be readily secured rigidly on the body and which include cutting edges which will out into ice on slippery pavements and the like and aid the'horse in gaining a strong foothold, thus preventing the horse from sliping or falling.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view looking at the under side of the horseshoe, showing the arrangement of the calks thereon; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional View taken through the body of the horseshoe and the toe calk; Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking downwardly on one of the calks; and Fig. a is a fragmentary plan view looklng into one of the milled grooves, with a calk thereof removed therefrom. 7

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a shoe body tially U-shape and similar to the ordinary horseshoe, the said shoe body at its medial or toe portion having a dependent socket 11 preferably formed therewith and provided with a longitudinally milled circular groove 12 forming parallel flanges 13, a toe calk 14L being adapted to be supported in the socket 11, with the said toe calk including a shank 15 having a gripping edge 16 and a head 17 consisting of similar parallel circular flanges 18, the said flanges extending longitudinally to the shank 15 and tapered toward one end with respectto the 10 having a substanc substantially shank so that the toe calk 14 can be arranged in the milled groove 12, with the flanges engaging the milled portions of the groove, thus rigidly binding the toe calk in the socket 11.

The heel portions of the shoe body 10 are provided with sockets 19 constructed similarly to the socket 11 and heel calks 20 similar in construction to the toe calk 14 are adapted to be arranged in grooves 21 formed in the sockets 19 on the heel portions of the shoe body, the heel calks 20, however, having their gripping edges adapted to lie in the plane of movement of the hoof of the horse, whereas the gripping edge 16 of-the toe calk 1a extends transversely to the plane of movement of the hoof of the horse, thus insuring a positive grip on slippery pavements and surfaces.

From the foregoing description it will be noted that my device is of a simple and durable construction, consisting substantially of a plurality of heel calks and a similar toe calk, all of which are similarly mounted upon the heel portions and toe portion respectively of a shoe body which is preferably formed of a single piece of metal, the

"With a horseshoe of the character described it will be apparent that when one of the calks becomes worn and unfit for use it can be readily driven out of the socket in which it normally lies and a new calk inserted therein, the said calks being held in the sockets by the frictional engagement of the heads of the calks with the milled surfaces of the grooves formed in the sockets.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a device of the class described, in combination a horse shoe formed with a pair of hook-shaped flanges forming a socket between them, each of said flanges having a substantially semi-circular inner edge and an outwardly beveled edge, the circular edges of said flanges formedin a plane with the flat surface of the horse shoe while the beveled edges thereof converge outwardly of the socket, and a calk consisting of a V-shapedprojection having lateral extending semi circular flanges In testimony whereof I affix my signature adapted to snugly fit the seml-circular edges in presence of tWo Witnesses.
