GEORGE T. CHAPMAN, OF WHITE PLAINS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO \VILLIAM HARVEY MERRITT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,021, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed May 1, 1889. Serial No. 309,145. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Plains, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists of a shoe having an upwardly-curved tongue projecting from the.
toe of the shoe, the purpose of which is to compel the horses to lift the fore feet when shod with such shoes with more action and higher range, which has a beneficial effect in causing them to step out with longer strides and more speed than without such shoes.
The invention is designed more particularly for breaking young horses for high speed; but it is useful to improve the speed of older horses, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved shoe, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the shoe and a hoof to which it is attached.
The shoe proper, as a, may be of any approved form, with or without calks.
b is the forwardly-proj ecting and upwardlycurved tongue of my invention. It is welded on or formed together with the shoe in any approved way, so as to project forward from the toe and to curve upwardly therefrom, as shown, the length and the curve being varied more or less according to the requirements of the case; but the length should be equal to or greater than the width of the bar of the shoe and the angle of inclination from five to fifteen degrees, or thereabout.
At the heels of the shoe Ihave represented the inwardly-projecting supports 0, such as are useful in cases of abnormally-contracted heels, which I will also use in some cases, together with the toe-elevating tongue; but the tongue is alike useful with shoes not having such heel-supports.
I am aware that some marsh-shoes have been made with both lateral and forward extensions for largely increasing the bearingsurface for better support on soft ground; but these are not ordinary shoes, such as may be worn for the purposes of my shoe, and some shoes of ordinary form have been made with v slight forward extensions for the application of toe-weights; but, so far as I know, a tongue having such length of projection and angle of inclination as will effect the purpose of my invention has not been made.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A horseshoe having an integral tongue projecting forward and upward from the toe about the length of the width of the bar of the shoe or more, and at an inclination of five to fifteen degrees, or thereabout, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' GEO. T. CHAPMAN.
