To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RED CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vallonia Springs, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in horseshoes and more particularly detachable calks therefor.
The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and provide one which will be inexpensive to manufacture and to which the calks may be quickly and easily attached and as readily removed and replaced.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the improved horseshoe having the calks applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1; Fig. at is a detail section taken on the line 4t4: in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of one of the heel calks.
In the drawings 1 denotes the body of the horseshoe which is of ordinary shape. Upon the under side of its toe portion is formed an enlargement 2 in which is punched or otherwise formed a transverse opening 3 for the reception of the shank 4 of a right angular toe calk 5. The body of the calk 5 extends downwardly and is tapered toward its lower end and the shank 4 extends rearwardly from the upper portion of the body 5 and at right angles thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The shank l is retained in the opening or socket 3 by a screw 6 passed upwardly through registering openings in the enlargement 2 and shank 4 and having its head 7 countersunk in the bottom face of said enlargement. Each of the rear ends or heel portions of the shoe is also provided upon its under face with an enlargement 8 having a transverse notch or slot 9 extending inwardly from its extremity and adapted to receive the right angular shank 10 of a heel calk 11. These heel calks are similar to the toe calk and the body portion of each extends downwardly and is tapered, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5. A screw 12 is used for fastening each heel calk in its recess or slot 9, said screw having its head 13 countersunk in the bottom face of one of the enlargements 8, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. For the purpose of preventing the heel calk from turning on the screw 12, the back of the slot or recess 9 is formed with a tapered socket let to receive a beveled and tapered end 15 on the shank 10 of the heel calk.
This construction insures an effective attachment of the heel calks with the shoe so that they cannot possibly turn or twist and at the same time allows the heel portions of the shoe to be easily shaped at a small cost for the reception and attachment of the heel calks.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
The herein described horseshoe having an enlarged heel portion formed with a transverse recess extending from its extremity inwardly and from one side edge to-the other, said recess having its back formed with converging top and bottom portions, and converging end portions whereby a pyramidal socket is produced in said recess, said enlarged heel portion of the shoe being also formed with a screw threaded opening intersecting the recess and formed at one end with a countersink, a right angular calk having a tapereddepending outer end, and a rectangular inner end formed in its central portion with a screw threaded opening to register with the one in the heel portion of the shoe, the extremity of said rectangular end of the calk being pyramidally shaped to enter said socket in the recess of the heel portion of the shoe, and a screw arranged in said alining screw threaded openings and having its head flush with the bottom face of the enlarged portion of the shoe, said screw retaining the calk in the shoe and the engagement of the pyramidal-shaped extremity of the calk with said socket in the recess of the heel portion of the shoe preventing said calk from turning axially on the screw.
