UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
l/VEET R. UCHTMANN, OF NFV YORK, N. Y.
CHANGE RECEIVER AND TRANSFER TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,703, dated J une 7, 1892.
Application tiled November 1l, 1891. Serial No. 411,609. (No model.)
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that I, WEET RUCHTMANN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Change-Receivers, of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a change-receiver, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and effective device capable of application to a counter orlike support adapted to receive change, and which may be conveniently and expeditiously manipulated totransfer the change from the receiving-section of the device to the hand of the person for whom the change is intended.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device represented as applied to a counter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken, practically, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the receiving-table, the said section being taken, practically, on the line 3 of Fig. 1.
In the counter A or other support to which the device is to be applied two openings 10 and 11 are made, the said openin gs being preferably rectangular in general contour and separated by a narrow strip, tongue, or crossbar 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Beneath the openings a casing 13 is constructed. Within this casing, near the bottom thereof, a platform la is pivoted, the pivotal point of said platform being near one end, and the pivot of the platform is so located in the casing that it is below the opening 10, and the platform is of suficientlength so that the major portion thereof extends beneath the opposite opening 11. As the pivot of the platform is located very close to one end, the opposite end may be pressed upward, and when so carried will extend out through the opening 11, as shown in Fig. 2. The pressure necessary for lifting upward the platform is obtained through the medium of atable 15, which table is hinged at one end to one side or end wall of the opening 10 in such a manner that when the table is in a horizontal position it will be flush with the upper face of the counter A. The table is ot' a size to practically lill the opening 10, and is provided upon its under face at its free end with downwardly-extending arms 16, which arms are adapted to bear upon the platform 14 just back of its pivot. Upon the platform at its free end a coin-receiving table 17 is located, the said receiving-table being held some distance from the upper face of the platform through the medium of cross-bars 18 or the equivalent thereof.
While the general contour of the receivingtable is rectangular, conforming to the shape of the opening 10, which it practically fills, the said table is dividedinto three membersnamely, a central body member a, which is fixed to the cross-bars, and wings a and a2, located one at each side. These wings are hinged to the body-section in any suitable or approved manner. The body-section is somewhat triangular, and the wings are of like shape, but narrower than the body-section. The bases of the wings and those of the bodysection of the receiving-table are located at opposite ends, as is best shown in Fig. l. Each wing has secured thereto a rod 19. These rods extend diagonally beneath the table in opposite directions and cross each other, as best shown in Fig. 3. At the end of each rod 19 a weight 2O is located, and the rods are limited in their downward movement by staples 21 or the equivalents thereof, secured to the under face of the body-section of the table. Nhen the receiving-table is in its normal or horizontal position, it is parallel with the platform 14:, which is likewise horizontal at that time, and the upper face of the receiving-table is flush, or practically so, with the top of the counter, the wings being in the same plane as the bodysection, being maintained in this position by the weighted rods 19, resting upon the cap 22 of a vertical post 23, which post is secured to the bottom of the casing 13 and extends upward through an opening 2lin the platform beneath the central portion of the table. The cap 22 of the post 23 is preferably somewhat inclined in IOO the person for whom the change is intended,V
by placing his hand upon the table 15, palm upward, and bearing down upon said table, will force the pivoted end of the platform 14 downward, and thereby carry its free end up-v ward and the leaf-table with it, forcing said table to assume the inclined position shown in Fig. 2, the inclination being suoli that the change upon the receiving-table will slide into the hand upon the table 15, as the hand will at that time be immediately beneath the receiving-table. As the receiving table is carried upward the rods 19 are removed from engagement with the cap of the post 23, which permits the weights 42O, attached to the rods, to act, and in acting the weights carry the rods downward, and thereby force the wingsections of the receiving-table upward, the object being to cause the wings to stand at an angle to the body-section of the receivingtable, and thereby prevent the change from slipping over the sides and compel it to slide olf at the lower end.
The device is exceedingly simple, durable, and practical and is applicable to any place where change is to be made-as in front of a cashiers desk, for instance.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a pivoted platform and a table carried by the platform, the said table being provided with automatically-folding wings, of a second table having a bearing upon the platform near one end, substantially as shown and described, whereby when the second table is pressed downward the leafiable is elevated over it, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of thc character described,a platform pivoted near one end, a table supported by the platform, provided with leaves and gravity devices operating the leaves, a check device engaging with the gravity devices, and a second table having bearing at one end upon the platform and located near one end of the leaf-table, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a support, a platform pivoted to the support near one end, a table carried by the platform, provided with lea-ves at opposite sides, and weighted arms connected with the leaves and extending beneath the table in opposite directions,of acheck device adapted for engagement with the weighted arms when the table is in a horizontal position, and a second table having one end hinged and the other free, the free end having engagement with the platform between its pivot and the end nearest to which the pivot is located, the said second table being also located adjacent to one end of theleaf-table, whereby when the second table is pressed downward the leaf-table will be elevated over and at au inclination thereto, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a receptacle divided into two compartments and a table hinged to one wall of one of the compartments, of a platform pivoted in the receptacle near one end and beneath the table, and a connection ben tween the table and the shorter end of the platform, a table carried by the platform adapted to carry articles, comprising a bodysection and leaf-sections, weighted arms attached to the leaves and extending beneath the body-section of the table in opposite directions, and a stop-post secured to the casing or receptacle and adapted to extend upward through the opening in the platform to engage with the weighted arms, as and for the purpose specified.
