To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. COGGE- SHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys or Game Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to toys or game devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to entertain and amuse both the old and young.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved toy or game device; Fig.2, a section thereof on the line 2 2; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3, and Fig. 4 a sectional View showing a detail of the construction.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a toy or game device consisting of a main oblong base, case, or box composed of a top 5, ends 6, and sides 7, and formed centrally of the base, case, or box is a backwardly-directed extension 8, which is rectangular in form and which is higher at the back thereof than the box or case, and the top 9 of which is inclined downwardly and forwardly in the direction of the top plate of the box or case, and the top plate 9 of said case or box in front of said backwardly-directed extension is also inclined forwardly, as shown by the dotted lines 9 in Fig. 3, and the side walls of the backwardly-directed extensions 8 are higher than the top plate 9 thereof and are inwardly and downwardly inclined, as shown at 10.

At the center of the main case or box is a pin 11, and at the opposite sides thereof are longitudinal grooves 12, which are formed in the top plate 5, and in front of said groove is a row of pins 13, and at the outer end of said grooves are formed longitudinal openings 14, in which are pivoted plates 15, the pivotal supports of said plates being arranged at the center thereof, as shown at 16, and said plates are provided at their outer ends with downwardly-directed extensions 17, and at the rear of the ends of the main case or box and at the opposite sides of the backwardly-directed extension 8 thereof are formed or placed supplemental boxes 18, which are provided with covers 19, which are hinged to the tops of the backs of said boxes, as shown at 20, and the hinges 20 consist of spring-hinges and are adapted to throw the hinged covers 19 upwardly and backwardly.

Each of the covers 19 is provided at its forward edge with a downwardly-directed grooved pin 21, and pivotally connected at 22 with the inner sides of the fronts of the boxes 18 are jaws 23, which'are adapted to engage with said headed pins when the covers 19 are closed, and the lower ends of these jaws are connected by a cord or similar device 24, with which is connected a wire or rod 25, which passes through the bottoms 26 of the boxes 18, and which are provided at their lower ends with angular arms 27, which pass through keepers 28, secured to the lower sides of the pivoted plates 15, this construction being shown in Figs. 3 and 4 in full lines and in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

The jaws 23 are provided with downwardlydirected ends, with which the cord 24 is connected, and between said downwardly-directed ends of said jaws is an expansive spring 29.

Arranged at the rear side of the grooves 12 in the top of the base, case, or box is a row of pins 30, similar to the pins 13, and the downwardly and forwardly inclined bottom of the backwardly-directed extension 8 is provided with similar pins 31, which are arranged in horizontal and diagonal rows or in such manner that the pins of one row are arranged alternately with reference to those of the adjoining row, and the rear portion of the bottom of the extension 8 is preferably clear or not provided with pins, and arranged in each of the boxes 18 is an expansive spiral spring 32, on the upper end of which is placed the figure or representation of a mans head, as shown at 33, and Ialso provide a spherical body or ball 34, which is preferably composed of some heavy material, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings andv the following statement thereof.

The game, if the device is used as a game device, consists in placing the ball 34 on the rear portion of the bottom 9 of the backwardlydirected extension 8 and allowing it to roll through between the pins.3l and 30 into the groove or grooves 12 and then on to the inner end of the plate or plates 15, and the weight of said ball is sufficient to depress the inner end of said plate or plates, as shown in Fig. 2, and this operation will release the hinged cover or covers 19 of the box or boxes 18 and said cover or covers will be thrown upwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, and the figure or figures 33 will be thrown upwardly by the spring 32. This solution is difficult by reason of the arrangement of the pins 30 and 31, and the ball, when once released, is as apt to roll into one ofthe grooves 12 as the other; but when the ball enters one of said grooves the solu- 1 tion is practically accomplished, for the reason that it is an easy matter to roll the ball onto the adjacent plate 15, and, as will be seen, said grooves 12 serve only as guides for a ball after it passes between the pins 81 and l prevent said ball from rolling off of or over the main oblong box or case, and any suitable guide or device may be provided for this purpose.

The downwardly-directed extensions 17 of the plates 15 are adapted to serve as weights, and it will be understood that in closing the covers 19 of the boxes 18 the figures 33 must be depressed, and my improved device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A puzzle or game device comprising an oblong box or case, the top of which is pro vided at each side of the center thereof with longitudinal grooves at the ends of which are pivoted plates, said box or case being also provided centrally thereof with a backwardlydirected extension, the top of which is forwardly and downwardly inclined, and boxes which are placed at each side of said extension, and provided with spring-hinged covers,depressible springs mounted in said boxes, and provided with figures at their upper ends, and devices in operative connection with said pivoted plates for holding the covers of said boxes in the closed position, and said box or case and the top of said backwardly-directed extension being provided with pins which are arranged in horizontal and diagonal rows, substantially as shown and described.

2. A puzzle or game device comprising an oblong box or case, the top of which is provided at each side of the center thereof with longitudinal grooves at the ends of which are pivoted plates, said box or case being also provided centrally thereof with a backwardlydirected extension, the top of which is forwardly and downwardly inclined, and boxes which are placed at each side of said extension, and provided with spring-hinged covers, depressible springs moun ted in said boxes, and provided with figures at their upper ends, and devices in operative connection with said pivoted plates for holding the covers of said boxes in the closed position, and said box or case and the top of said backwardly-directed extension being provided with pins which are arranged in horizontal and diagonal rows, and the outer ends of said pivoted plates being weighted, substantially as shown and described.

3. A puzzle or game device comprising an oblong box or case, said case being provided centrally thereof with a backwardly-directed extension, the top of which is inclined forwardly and downwardly, and at each side of said extension with boxes which are provided with spring-hinged covers, expansive spiral springs mounted in said boxes, and supporting figures or heads, said oblong box or case being also provided with longitudinal grooves in the top thereof, at the outer ends of which are openings in which are mounted pivoted plates, pivoted spring-operated jaws mounted within said boxes and adapted to operate in connection with pins secured to said hinged covers, and a rod in operative connection with said jaws, and passing downwardly and provided with an extension which passes beneath the inner ends of said pivoted plates, substantially as shown and described.

4. A puzzle or game device comprising a main oblong box or case, said case being provided centrally thereof with a backwardlydirected extension the top of which is inclined forwardly and downwardly, and at each side of said extension with boxes which are provided with hinged covers, expansive spiral springs mounted in said boxes, and supporting figures or heads, said main oblong box or casing being also provided in front of said boxes with openings in which are placed pivoted plates, operative devices in connection with said pivoted plates and the hinged covers of said boxes, and the downwardly and forwardly inclined top of the backwardly-directed extension of the main oblong box or case being also provided with a plurality of pins which are arranged, substantially as shown and described.
