HOTVARD WINDLE, OF FAIRVILLFJ, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILK-CAN ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 476,502, dated June 7, 1892. Application filed August 11,1891. Serial No. 402,361. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOWARD WINDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing atFairville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Attachment to be Used in Connection with Milk- Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement on milk-cans,which, first, prevents the separation of the lid from the can; second, holds the lid tightly in the mouth of the can while in use, and, third, holds the lid rigid on the side of the can when the contents are being removed or the can is being cleansed. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of top of can; Fig. 2, a side view showing lid as held in position when off can; Fig. 3, a side elevation with lid in position on can; Fig. 4, a plan of the springs that hold the lid Fig. 5, a view of link between upper and lower springs.
Similar letters refer to similar throughout the similar views.
The object is attained as follows, viz: Brass springs, Fig. i, a a are connected at either end by means of loops to the wires k and p and by similar loops to wires 0?. and 0, which are connected by the link (1, Fig. 5, which is made of heavy tin. lVires p and k are fastened, respectively, to can A and lid B by means of the tin loops 6 e, Figs. 1 and 3, which are soldered, respectively, to the lid B and the can A. The springs a a being fastened to the lid 13 by means of the wire 7t and the loop 8 and the springs o, a by the wire 1) and the loop 6 to the can A, as heretofore described, and being connected to each other by the said link or hinge (l, prevents the separation of the lid from the can. The springs CL 0. when in position are inclosed by the tin coverings f and g,'Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which are soldered, respectively, to the lid B and the can A.
Soldered to the covering g on the can A is a wire hook h, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and soldered to the covering f on the lid B is a wire loop parts or eye m, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the object of which is as follows: The parallel springs a a under the tin cover g on the can A yield sufficiently to permit the removal of the lid from the mouth of the can. When the lid Bis thus removed and thrown back, Fig. 2,the springs a a under the tin cover suliiciently to permit the insertion of the hook it on the can A into the eye or loop m on the lid B, which holds the lid rigidly to the side of the can.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, witha milk-can and its lid, of a hinge uniting them, said hinge being attached to each by a yielding connection, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a milk-can and its lid, of a spring-loop attached to each, said loops being'flexibly joined together, substantially as described.
f on the lid B yield 3. The combinatiomwith a milk-can and its lid, of the spring-loop attached to each and the link (1, uniting the loops, substantially as described.
A. The combination, with a milk can and its lid, of the spring-loop attached to each, a casing surrounding each loop, and alink uniting the loops, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a milk-can provided with a hook it, of a lid provided with the eye m and a flexible yielding connection uniting the can and the lid, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with the can A, having the casing g, provided with a hook h, of the lid B, having the casing f, provided with an eye m, the spring-loops inclosed in the casings, having one end attached to the can and the lid, respectively, and the link (I, uniting the other ends of the loops, substantially as described.
HOWARD WINDLE.
