.. A. MITCHELL.
BUCKET.
No. 526,084. y Patented Sept. 18, 1894.
iTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW MITCHELL, OF OARBONADO, W'ASHINGTON, ASSIGOR OF ONE- HALF TO JAMES MAITLAND, OF SAME PLACE.
BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,084, dated September 18, 1894.
Application led March 29, 1894. Serial No, 505,633. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.
.Be it known that I, ANDREW MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Carbonado, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckets; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in buckets and similar articles provided with a lid or cover, and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap yet 'strong and durable lbucket provided with an" encircling wire at the upper edge which is formed into the ears to which the handle or bail is connected and upon diametrically opposite sides with loops or eyes into one of which engages a wire or other means on the lid and the other serving as a guide and stop fora spring plate secured to the bucket and adapted to engage another wire or lateral projection on the lid. This forms a strong bucket which is not liable to break at the upper edge and one in which the lid can be securely held in position and yet be readily removed by simply disengaging the spring plate from its projection, when the lid can be turned upon the opposite projection or pin which rests in its loop and forms a sort of hinge for the partial removal of the lid or, if desired, after it has been disengaged from the spring plate theopposite projection can be disengaged from its loop and the lid removed entirely.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective View of my improved bucket with the lid in position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same, the section being taken at right angles to the bail.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
In the drawings-A represents the bodyy ears in any suitable way. At diametrically opposite points and at points midway between the ears in which the bail is held this wire is formed with means for securing the lid in place. At one of these points the wire is bent to form a loop E which extends upward in substantially Vertical line with the wall of the body portion, while at the opposite point the wire is bent to form a substantially horizontal elongated loop F for a purpose which will now be explained.
G is a spring plate having its lower end secured to the outer wall of the body portion in any suitable manner, as by being soldered thereto, while its upper end extends through the loop F and is provided with a hole H, the spring plate being free from its pointof attachment upward so as to spring back and forth, being limited in its outward movement by the outer bar of the loop. The upper end of this plate is preferably curved slightly outward as shown so as to facilitate the entrance of the pin or projection on the lid into the hole of said plate.
I is the lid. It may be provided with any form of handle as a ring J shown and at diametrically opposite points has secured to its upper face the pins, projections or wires K which project slightly beyond the edge of the lid.
In practice the lid is placed in position by engaging one of its Wires in the loop E and then springing the spring plate outward until the other pin or projection enters the hole therein, or the lidmay, after entering one of the pins or wiresin the loop E, be forced down by pressure upon the top of the lid when the other pin will ride down the inclined face of the upper end of the spring plate into the hole therein.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A bucket having at its upper edge a continuous Wire formed with ears for the attachment of a bail and with diametrically opposite loops, a spring plate held to the body of :o the bucket and passed through one of said loops, and a lid having diametricall y opposite pins upon its outer face as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW MITCHELL.
